I broke my carrier bearing today, felt it coming via a shudder when I would leave from a stop but didn't know what it was. I have noticed that my rear end is not perfectly centered. There is probably 3/4"-1" difference between the distance from each back tire to the frame. Will this cause the carrier bearing to go out sooner? Is it putting any unnecessary stress on it?

Nope, it's not hurting a thing. The u-joints need to have some angularity, or they won't last. They don't care at all what direction the angle misalignment has.

did you lower the truck?without installing an adjustable panhard bar?// the tires equally spaced from the frame rails the pinion yoke will still b offcentered but will look better

If you didn't lower the truck I'd be concerned about why the rear end is off center but it didn't have anything to do with the carrier failing.

The truck is lowered 3" and does have an adjustable panhard bar.

When I lowered mine i kept tearing up center support bearings, too. I noticed they always failed at the metal housing. I've seen a few guys on here put some extra tac welds on the housing before they are installed and it kept them from breaking. Most of those bearings are made in China or some place similar and aren't welded together all that well.

off hand i'd say maybe adjust the adjustable panhard bar to get the tires the same distance from the frame rails so it looks right// the additional tack welds is a great tip too

That was it, cheap China part. The driveline shop beefed up the housing so I should be ok now. Back on the road!

Well I ended up getting my rear end rebuilt because the bearings were shot and I am still trying to chase down the vibration. Had them throw in a Eaton posi unit while the patient was open, BUT I still have a shudder when I take off from a stop. I haven't been able to stop thinking it is something to do with my driveline angles. Anyone else have this problem?

are you running a stock convert or after market stall?

You could have a weak or broken engine or tranny mount giving a bit of a shudder on acceleration.
