66 tranny problems
so heres the problem fellas. i think i may have it figured out but id like to run it by the gurus before i go spendin to much money. truck has an inline 6 and a 3 speed. was runnin and drivin great. well then the clutch pedal got real stiff and the tranny wont go into ANY gears. to get home i had to start the truck in gear with no clutch and then ghost shift the rest of the way home. so i was thinkin maybe the throwout bearing. got home and got under the truck and had my wife hit the clutch a few times. i can see it moving back and forth like it should. so im thinkin maybe the diaphrams on the presure plate are shot? is this makin any sense to yall? help would be greatly apreciated.

Pull the inspection cover off the bottom of the bellhousing then get the wife to move the pedal. You should be able to see what went wrong. When she pushes the clutch pedal to the floor you should see the fingers on the clutch move in. If not could be broken fork or fork pivot or linkage adjustment is wacky.

so i got the inspection cover off and i can see the fork moving the throwout bearing in and out. it seems to just barely and i mean barely be moving the plates apart from each other. so yall know this truck had been sitting prior to my owner ship for about 9 months

Long ago I had a Studebaker that sat in the backyard for months at a time, and ultimately the clutch lining bonded to either the flywheel or the pressure plate. The next time I tried to drive the car, the lining peeled off the clutch disc and wadded up between the flywheel and pressure plate. The clutch became inoperative. The only way I could move the car under its own power was to start it in gear with the rear end jacked up off the ground, and have my wife drop the jack. Once I got in the garage or the back yard I turned off the key and hit the brakes, killing the engine and stopping the car.
I've only seen this happen once, but it is a possibility.

you are gong to have to drop the linkage sooner or later. drop it at he Z/bar and then check to see how easy the pedal is to move . once in a while the frame bracket where the z/bar attaches can crackand when you push the pedal that frame brkt moves and that can give you the feeling that you are describing. if the linkage a nd brkt are all fine then you willl know what the next step is, and tha is to remove the clutch and with a 3 speed you have the easiest one to do. drop the d/shaft, shift linkage, speedo cable , trans and then the clutch assy. 1 hr at the most

Before you pull the linkage apart adjust it so the throw out bearing is almost touching the fingers on the clutch. Then see if it works better. I've seen the lock nut on the rod back off and the adjustment go out of wack. Could save an hour of clutch replacement.

Sounds like a problem i had years ago in my 71 chevy pickup...under the clutch fork, there is a metal spring,where it pivots on a ball in the bellhousing.When it breaks you lose most of your pedal.I adjusted the clutchrod all the way out so i had clutch for a while untill ifixed it.
