Re: anti-theft tactics

I got ignition disable installed when I had the remote keyless put in. The truck won't start and a moderately loud alarm will go off unless you use the remote to unlock the vehicle. (about $150 for both, as I recall - a cheap Viper/Valet or something like that.) It has a manual override button hidden under the dash if you don't have the remote. My best defense is to have an ugly old truck (on the outside) which is not appealing to thieves. Also, detachable face on stereo head unit will help. If you have anything nice someone will eventually try to steal it. I don't have theft insurance due to the old age of the vehicle, so I am taking a risk. Even if you have theft insurance your extra mods won't likely be covered for much, if anything. If you want to get your stolen truck back, then Lojack is a good idea - but many $$$ - there are cheaper GPS trackers you can put on your vehicle. If you don't drive your truck daily, you might be able to get classic car insurance with theft, which is cheap.

Re: anti-theft tactics

Yup. He was a jackass. He wouldnt even let me show him the vin. It was a scary situation. I fortunately called LEO and they got there in a few min. I was more upset that he cracked the front valance/spoiler and his insurance wouldnt pay for it. The car is all plastic so it wiggles on the freeway. I will get it fixed soon as this just happened in feb. My deductable is $500 and the cost of a new bumper/paint and prep and reinstall is $750 so i would rather not use my insurance and have my premiums rise. Lesson learned. But yes if they want it they can get it no doubt about that. Luckily for me his truck was noisy and i'm an insomniac. LOL My home that i am purchasing will have security camera's on a closed loop that runs to a DVR and motion activation/NV. At least i can get a good look at who steals my stuff even if i cant be there at all times to prevent/stop it.

Re: anti-theft tactics

i'm glad this topic has been brought up because it's something that is now on my mind since i'm getting ready to drive my truck as a daily driver.

But first, how the heck can a dog weigh 250 lbs? Or even 180lbs? To me, that's not a dog---it's a small horse.

So, anyways at least 2 things i'm looking into are:

http://www.ravelco.com/

and i'm looking into getting cables not only to tie around the steering wheel+brake pedal, but the actual truck to lamposts, trees, parking meters---anything immovable.

Scroll down to harley-davidson cable:
http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/acc...son/index.html

i'm also looking into marine cable.

i would like to comment and discuss much more in depth. i am very busy and have been recently re-assigned to night shift, so further discussion will be more difficult but i will make the effort. Please be patient.

Re: anti-theft tactics

Two words and $2 HORN BUTTON!!! Take a horn button and mount it under the carpet about about where a floor board dimmer switch goes then cut the yellow (I think on these trucks) ignition wire that goes to your starter and wire it in. When you crank the truck you just put a little pressure on the button and that will allow the curcut to complete if not it will act like it has a dead battery. Works for joy riders and petty thieves does nothing for wreckers though.

I guess another alternative would be to log chain a 55 gallon drum about ten feet from the truck so if someone gets it with a wrecker they are dragging a 55 gallon drum down the road and if that won't get any attention I don't know what will.

You can think or wish your going to stop someone all you want. Anyone that knows what they are doing in a tow truck will be driving out of your driveway in less than 30 seconds from the time they get to the house with your vehicle on the hook. Im often amazed at the amount of noise I can get away with making and never see a person or even a light come on. Not every situation is ideal and some talk longer than you want to be there but for the most part. People are waking up in the morning and dont know the car is gone until they walk outside. Not trying to P!ss in anyones cheerios just talking from a different point of view than most ever get to see.
Call me paranoid, or call me crazy; but if someone or something wakes me in the middle of the night, the last thing I'm going to do is let them know I am watching...

Personally I am a really light sleeper, and it gets really annoying being awoken all night long. Even after 5 years of listening to my neighbor get his truck warmed up for work at 4:15 am every morning it still wakes me and my dogs up. Everytime they bark I wake up and investigate, and yes sometimes it gets quite old. But I have caught waterheads trying to break into my car and truck before. I've also caught a few different ones trying to get into my various apartments in my younger years. I guess I'm just blessed....

Re: anti-theft tactics

The best insurance you can afford if they want it bad enough they will find a way or use a gun.I do repo work and that story is true i met a lot of people who do the job wrong.I vin every car before i take it even check the back seat for kids because some people are bad parents. The best laugh i had was a guy tried to suck gas out of my 68 mustang i watched him.He put the hose in and kept sucking and nothing came out.The joke was on him i have a fuel cell the real cap is in the trunk the one between the tail lights is just there to cover the hole. After that i used panel glue and put piece of sheet metal over the hole.

Insure it for what it's worth and sleep easy. Now if nobody steals it you're out all your insurance money but it's pretty cheap piece of mind...

Re: anti-theft tactics

as a general rule, the people that would see me cleaning my guns are people i would trust enough not to steal my truck. i'm not into fancy stereos or anything. and i've learned to not leave anything valuable in plain sight. i think i'll look at a lojack, an interlock device of some sort, and get it insured for what it's worth. thanks for all the ideas.

Re: anti-theft tactics

I agree on the insurance part, just make sure to document all your modifications with good photo's and make sure you have a agreed value on what your truck and accessories are worth BEFORE you have a problem! By the way i was at a Super Chevy show in Memphis TN. about four years ago and someone all but stole my 87...punched the drivers side door lock, tore the column apart and the only thing that stopped them was the ol' fuel tank selector switch in the middle routine! After the police report was made i showed the cop and he couldnt believe it...i put the tank swich on the full tank side pulled the rod that they had hanging out of what was left of my column and it fired right up! I went back to the show on Saturday with all the broken parts and damage to the truck and stuck a note on the door thanking the local criminals for their "Southern hospitality"!

Re: anti-theft tactics

putting a switch on the starter will prevent it from turning over,(no noise unless they didn't find your alarm).put a switch on the coil and you may hear somone trying to start it.All they will feel is the thud of the baseball bat.The coil switch would cause it to flood (still not gona start)but the truck will still be there.....try to explain why you are gaping/cleaning plugs in the middle of the night.....lol rig the coil switch to charge the body in off position.....you then just bring the remaining finger tips in for printing......thats if you don't hear the person leaving

My alarm's shock sensor is set really sensitive, and the 2 way paging remote has a mile range, and lets me know when it goes off.

Re: anti-theft tactics

I am working on my anti theft vehicle system or at least it wont get towed, I can do car alarms ,with that said, I can wire relays lots of different ways,,, I am trying to do the air bag system to where I am going to have it lay frame, and the relays for the compressor and valves not activate, till turned on either by a switch, lights , lighter or what ever I think is safer, might even use a newer car pcm chip, but once again I have a pcm on my 5.3 swap.. so it could get broken into but more likely not towed...

Re: anti-theft tactics

its funny this post is on here i got broke in to sunday night. they only stole my cd's, left the i phone and wallet on the dash. i figured it was a few kids from the neighborhood so when i locked up monday night i took a old electric fence charge box with the name BULLDOZER on the side of it and wired the hot lead to my front bumper, i have to almost touch the garage door so its not blocking the sidewalk, disconnected the battery , and plugged it in. about a 45 minutes after i turned it on the front sprinklers came on and watered down the driveway... about 30 minutes after that i heard the scream, i ran outside as fast as i could all that i saw is two flip flops and a bicycle. it was the kid from down the street. i haven't got my cd's back but his father said i could keep the bike till the cd's show up. his dad sat and chuckled with me for almost a hour

Re: anti-theft tactics

Run a switched wire from the coil and attach it to a seat spring that's very near the vinyl on the top of the seat. Every time it fires, it'll nail his ass.

Re: anti-theft tactics

when my trucks are running again i intend to put battery cut off switches in them.i figure it will deter the joyrider types as the town i live in has a pretty high property crime rate but a pretty low murder/assault/personal armed robbery rate

as far as a deterrant for those with tow trucks im not sure yet as im not sure on how to deter something like that except to take all 4 wheels off nightly but who wants to deal with that inconvience daily.
