Getting paint off chrome

I have my emblem -- chevorlet/C10 -- that goes on the side of my burb. It's chrome but it has paint on it. I've tried taking a knife and gently scrape it off cut still leave little scratches on it. Is there something else that would work better?
I was thinking of cleaning it with gas, but I'm afraid it would take the chrome off.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Joe

Re: Getting paint off chrome

Hi Joe,

I usually use lacquer thinner and/or 000 steel wool to remove paint from chrome emblems and trim.

Doesn't scratch or damage the chrome at all. I wouldn't recommend it for the "chrome" plated plastic emblems on newer vehicles, but on the older metal real-chrome emblems it works great.

x3 on the steel wool, but normally I use windex as sometimes I am out of thinner. Trevor

Re: Getting paint off chrome

try a lil paint stripper.
steel wool will work but it DOES scratch the chrome, minutely. chrome is only a couple microns thick. which is why you see old doorknobs and toasters, etc w/ a goldish tint. that's the nickel underneath the chrome. simichrome works real good for polishing.

Re: Getting paint off chrome

Thanks everyone for the help. I have been putting my burb back together after it had been painted and what I was wanting to clean up was the emblem that goes on the front front fenders right behind the the tires that reads: "custom/10." My first post I mis-spoke and said it was "chevrolet/10."
But the more I look at this emblem I'm wondering if it isn't suppose to have paint inside the letterings. I saw in my classic chevys catolog that the ones they were selling looked like it had paint on it, but didn't state the colors.
I'm not sure one way or the other so I will stand by until someone can tell me.
Thank you,
Joe

Re: Getting paint off chrome

The emblems should be matte black in the "Custom" letter centers. If it`s paint you need to remove I always use paint stripper. It has no effect on the chrome at all.
