Dana 60

Will a Dana 60 rearend hold up in a racing truck?
If so how good will it be and how long will it last?

That question is too vague. Too many different kinds of "racing", I assume you mean a 4000# drag racer? What kind of gear? What kind of wheel? What kind of power?

The Dana 60 is a very strong rear found in many 9 second drag cars. They convert to flanged axles from full floaters and a 5 lug car pattern. In GMC trucks, there are some 67-68 1/2 tonners that had a 6 lug flanged axle (semi-floater).

It is also popular in rock-crawlers for its strength.

Dana 60s are a very sought out for rear end because of its brute strength. I have heard it being call "bombproof". In my opinion it should be good enough. They are very easy to work on too. I recently put a powr-loc posi in my Dana 60 and it only took 40mins for the whole swap. I love the Dana 60s. Just my opinion.

HotRod 929 is a little too optimistic on how "easy" a 60 is to work on. To correctly do a diff in an early 60 (before the 80's or so) you need a case spreader to properly pre-load the bearings on the differential. 60's sometimes spin the carrier bearing race is their largest problem. They are more difficult to do a ring and pinion setup on because the differential shims are underneath the carrier bearings. Everytime you need to change shims to adjust backlash, you have to pull the bearings, swap shims, and re-intsall. All of this with the case spreader in place. This is to do it "right." Hopefully HotRod's doesn't have any problems.

It would be in my truck. 68' 1/2 ton longbed. It has 3.54 gears and i have around 400 horses.
