Grease pencil marking on firewall

Jason and I just bought our sixth 72 BB and it has very clear orignal grease pencil markings on the firewall. Long ago we figured the model no., engine trans, brakes etc but we have not been able to de-code the no. 6 that is usually in the center or the 2T or 4T that are both ends i.e. the first and last marks on the firewall. No imput on the no. 6. On the 2T & 4T some have suggested paint combinations but we have seen both on all paint combinations. Thanks Paul

Re: Grease pencil marking on firewall

I believe that the grease pencil marks are from the inspectors as the truck went down the assembly line. As far as I know they don't have any bearing on components on the truck.
Pretty much the same as finding the piece of paper in the pocket of your new shirt that says inspected by #14.

Re: Grease pencil marking on firewall

That's not entirely true, as the model # of my truck is clearly on the firewall in grease pencil. I am not sure what else is on there, I'll have to look again.

Re: Grease pencil marking on firewall

Mercury694, you are on the right track. The model# tells story ex.
CE10734 Chevy,V8,1/2 ton, 115 in wheel base, fleet side. L # shows specific engine, M # shows transmission, J70 shows power brakes etc but I can not de-code the 6 in the center or the 2T 4T on the corners.
Thanks Paul

I don't know, but maybe the 2T = 2wd and 4T = 4wd?

Re: Grease pencil marking on firewall

I could have been for just about anything. Seqence going onto a line, markings for repair, etc. Now they use bar codes and scanners.

From memory Inspectors and the guy that put the vehicles in sequence on lines are the most likely to use grease pencils. Years ago they use to have seperate lines for certain things like AC, maybe like twotone paint, etc.

Re: Grease pencil marking on firewall

My 70 CST 4x4 has all the #'s your talking about with the 4T on the corners, the radiator mount reads 427X?

I also have a 72 GMC with nothing on the firewall.

My Dad custom ordered the 70 back in 70, back in the day when you could do this, instead of buying one off the lot. Could be an angle for you. Let us know what you come up with and I'll start searching my end.

That kinda looks military. I wonder if your truck belonged to the military at one time, and that is the inventory or property #?

Re: Grease pencil marking on firewall

I WORKED AT FLINT TRUCK & BUS IN THE 80s. I WAS A LAYOUT INSPECTOR THERE, & THEY MADE PICKUPS, SUBURBANS & BLAZERS. IT WAS AN ASSEMBLY PLANT. THE #s (LIKE 997 PICTURED) WAS A JOB # (THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH ANY INSPECTIONS). I'D BET THAT IS WHAT THAT # IS ON THAT 72. THEY WERE MARKED AN AWFUL LOT LIKE THAT (JUST SCRIBBLED ON THERE BY HAND WITH A GREASE PENCIL). I JUST LAST WEEK BOUGHT A M1009 3/4 TON MILITARY BLAZER THAT WAS MADE IN FEB. 1984, & IT'S A 50/50 CHANCE (THEY RAN TWO SHIFTS) THAT I SAW IT GO DOWN THE LINE. FUNNY... I THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE BADASS THEN & IT TOOK ME 26 YEARS TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD ONE. JOHN

Re: Grease pencil marking on firewall

John your explanation makes sense because after looking at many trucks I can find no rhyme or reason. No apparent connection to that particular truck.
Thank you and keep diggin' Paul
