Speedo Swap
I am wanting to swap out my 85mph speedo with an earlier 100mph speedo. I realize I will not be able to connect the VSS (guess that's what it's called) little green box to the older style. Question is, can I just remove that box and the wiring going up to the speedo? Or for some reason do I need it there for some sort of resistance for another reason? Yes I know my cruise won't work.
Year is an '87, I think the speedo said it was from like a 76-79. I'm really not seeing any issue with just removing that VSS from the loom, but wanted to be sure. |

The VSS also controls TCC lockup, EVAP purge, and cruise. Not having the TCC hooked up will cause excessive heat in the transmission, and can kill the trans if left that way. The truck may run a little hotter as well. (this is experience talking, BTW).

So can I just leave the box dangling in the back but not hooked up to the speedo? Or is that just still making it all not work?
I'm guessing it is sort of required to send a signal telling the computer what the speed is to help regulate the other stuff as well as the cruise? Now I'm confused. |

Just leaving it dangle will still cause all of the above. Same with a broken speedometer cable (that was the case with mine). With your truck being fuel injected, it is required to keep everything happy. It seems like it may have a hand in injector pulse, as well. It needs to stay.

You should be able to run an aftermarket VSS that's meant for TBI swaps.

And you're required to have a 40g Suburban tank to make it all work.
