Another Craigslist steal!!!!!!!
I feel just like I hit the lottery!!!!!!!!!Fooling around on Craigslist again while my kids are asleep, I run across an ad for someone selling a 5.7L engine 4 bolt main block for $ 40. I figure what the hell, I will see if it is still available. After playing phone and email tag with the guy for the better part of the weekend, I finally make it up there today to see it. This is after some conversations trying to get the motor and casting numbers from him.
Low and behold, he asks me what is a casting number? I figure young kid in this area, he must be into tuners.......I find out the casting number on the block is 3970010. The whole way to his house I am thinking to myself " What are the chances that this is a " 010 " & " 020 " tin / nickel content block. When I get there, to my suprise it was!!!!!!!! I couldn't pull that $ 40 bucks out of my pocket fast enough!!!!!!!!!! Get it home and look it over, seems to be alright. I see some evidence of repair as the pics will show and a few small cracks but, these could be casting flaws. Regardless, I still feel like a million bucks right now. Might have a new coffee table with this one. Just another 3970010 block in the garage to add to the collection. This one apparently came out of a 74' van or bus (block ID # V0604TKS)

Re: Another Craigslist steal!!!!!!!
I see these blocks very rarely around these parts. Only seen one 2 bolt and two 4 bolts for sale in the past 9-12 Months. I have been saving money for a short tail TH350 but, I could not pass this up once I looked at those set of numbers. All of the guys around here that are small block afficianados keep these under lock and key....makes me feel better finding this since I just missed out on a BW T10 tranny for $300 about a week ago. I like to think of myself as a novice motor man but besides the dz302 z28 block, this is one of the best production small blocks to be had (IMO)............

Re: Another Craigslist steal!!!!!!!
Looks like more then a casting flaw , might be a crack at the deck. I would get it mag checked at a machine shop first. Check this site for your block ID ,
http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php Q: What is a Bowtie, or heavy duty (nickle) block and do I have one? A: Tin and nickel are two metals that are commonly alloyed with cast iron to improve durability, hardness and heat dissipation. Some production engine blocks have the numbers "010", "020" or both cast into their front face, just above the main bearing bore. (The timing cover must be removed for these numbers to be visible.) If both numbers are present, one about the other, it indicates that the block alloy contains 10% tin and 20% nickel. A single number, either a "010" or "020" represents the amount of nickel and indicates negligible amounts of tin. No numbers, other than the casting numbers that are typically found beneath the timing cover, translates to only minor amounts of tin and nickel being present in the block alloy. However, cylinder wall thickness is the overridering consideration - and a block with no tin or nickel and thick cylinder walls is generally preferable to a high nickel block with thin walls http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php Desert PS:I have 5 of them if you need one.
