Enamel paint on my 72?

Was the factory paint enamel based in 72? I don't know anything about paint or body work, but I have been asked the question.

Thanks!

What ever it is if your thinking about painting it make sure you get a good sealer between the old paint and new. Sometimes these new Urethanes dont play well with the old paint (It may react). I would post this question in the painting section of the forum for more help.

I'm pretty sure Enamel was used in 72 because I have seen it mentioned in original literature. If I find the reference, I'll post it.

Re: Enamel paint on my 72?

there was reference to enamel in the lit... but the lit also said you couldn't get a 3.07 gear with a posi. (that too is wrong)
Every original paint truck I've seen was laquor... GM was still shooting laquor in the mid 80's.

I believe acrylic enamel was used on 1972 trucks even though GM did continue to use lacquer on cars all the was into the mid 80's.

Re: Enamel paint on my 72?

gm did use lacquer paint on the truck& cars my 71 c10 had lacquer paint I had a 72 truck also lacquer. not sure when they changed to enamel. but I did hear one time from a nice old man who worked at the fremont plant. he said gm used to run the trucks through a "reflow chamber" to get the lacquer to gloss up. some kind of hot lights! can't confirm this but it makes sense to me can you think how long it would take if they had to buff all the trucks? one off the line every 60 seconds? just sayin, cheers, Pat
