Laid some paint, added tires

Well I got to spend a couple of days with the truck this long weekend. I love this duplicolor paintshop stuff. Primer, paint, clear. I am no bodywork guy so it is far from perfect but for what I am trying to accomplish it should work just fine. I also picked up so dirty rims with 37" Super Swamper SSR's for $300. Painted the rims and I am very happy with the progress. I had gotten a little discouraged because it has been a while since I got to focus on the truck but this weekend really helped!!!

Started with:

Got the side primered:

Add Color and Clear:

Dirty Wheels:

Color and Clear:

New Side Markers (my favorite converson), Wheels, Lugs:

Then it got dark so I finished up the front without a lot of pics. The other side looks the same. Everything has been painted except for what still needs to be replaced: Passenger Fender, Hood, then I need to rust repair teh cab.

Re: Laid some paint, added tires

going to get flamed here but I just bought a automotive spray gun from Wal-Mart for $30 then I bought a regulator from Northern tool for $15. My shop has a compressor. It comes in quart cans for $22. There is no mixing or reducing just pour it in the gun and shoot. Primer first 5 minutes between coats, then wait 15 min, shoot color 5 minutes between coats, wait 15 min then clear. VERY VERY simple.
The only thing is I am not a body work guy and am not very good with bondo so if you get close you can see the imperfections under the paint but the paint itself looks great!!!

Re: Laid some paint, added tires

Here are a couple more.

Now for full disclosure, I don't know what everybody else wants in their truck, as I stated before I am not a professional painter or body work guy, this is a driver truck that has some upgrades and will have some nice features but I am have no desire for it to be a show truck it will be a duck boat puller and hunting truck so the below pic will show a rust spot I sanded down and painted over. Also you can see that wet sanding would help as well. Is it pefect nope but it suits what I want, looks better than rattle can and I can do the whole truck for less than $300. I just don't want anyone to think you are gonna get a $4000 paint job out of this but looks a hell of a lot better than fadded blue with rust spots

Re: Laid some paint, added tires

I have been going over and over in my head about duplicolor. My body work is going to be pretty good and mine will be a weekend driver to shows and for fun not for trophies. But I want a good paint job is duplicolor the way to go?

Love the Swampers & like the red but think Army green or
Camo would've been cool too.
But don't listen to me, it's your truck

Would love to see pictures of it in the dirt when it's done.

No it's not really a good way to go. If you want to get some good info about painting and paints, check out this board,

http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/body-exterior/

Do a search on duplicolor and you'll see it's not a great way to go. TCP Global makes some good laquer (which is what duplicolor is) that is a much better paint and $ for quanity about the same price, since duplicolor comes in quarts and you'll need about 1.5 gallons (6 quarts) to do the whole truck.

Great looking truck, don't see many with roll bars.

Just have to say it, "That is a real truck". Made to used as a truck, enjoy it.

Re: Laid some paint, added tires

Gun settings and/or temp would smooth that paint out. Looks like it was sprayed on too dry. A wetter coat will flow out smooth, up until the point it runs anyway.

Me and paint don't get along at all but I always say **if you're happy with it drive it because that's all that matters**.

I am sure I am doing it wrong but it is a learning process, I am not using a booth and it was well over 100 degrees when I was painting that. I do appreciate the input and will play with the gun settings some more before I do more painting. Some parts are real smooth some are not.

Also if you are going to put a lot of time into body work and going to shows I would suggest you know a lot about painting if you are going to use this stuff.

I am using it simply based on the fact I am not going to pay a professional to do it and I am not going to use rattle cans. I am going for the looks good from a distance. This is going to be a fun truck and a driver the only reason I even went with red is because it is kind a tribute to my godfather who got me into this whole gearhead thing with a 79 red ford called "big red".
