Pulled my rear diff. cover tonight

Removed the rear differential cover to check things out tonight.

The ring gear read
381903 9.37 GM 3-69 2

37 divided by 9 = 4.11

This is behind a 292, 4 speed & 1 pc. driveshaft with "4x4 tires". Tires are 31 x 10.50 R 15 LT's which has to be throwing the speedometer off. (I'm guessing) What tire is closest to original on the 2WD 1/2 tons? Also, is this a posi?

Gears have some pitting, so I may be in for replacing them

The 2nd pic look's to be a posi or limited slip of some sort.

I'll try to get another shot tomorrow nite

Thanks for the replies, I'll take new photos and see if they get chewed up when post. I can barely see anything on these.

Any comments on wheel & tire size are welcome.

pitting

Pitting on the gears won't hurt as long as it's not howling too loud. Pitting on the bearings is bad news.......Zoomy

Just for future reference, jack the rearend up and you can spin one of the axles forward, if the other side turns forward too then you have a posi. Thats just an easy way to tell if your not sure.

Not true. I had a factory posi in my 72 and if you spun it forward the other would go oppisite. I was told this was a GOV lock posi that is factory and not all that great, so when I blew the spider gears in a million pieces I put in a new Auburn posi and 4:11's. Now when you spin it forward then the other spins forward a TRUE posi.

yup, thats an eaton unit. I agree with ZOOMY......the pitting on the gears wont hurt you ,as long as they arent howling. By the looks, it probably wouldnt hurt to have a look at & or replace bearings tho. good luck, crazyL

Thanks All for the comments, I guess there may be a better test for a posi - involving high rpms and a lot of smoke

I think I'll go with your recommendation CrazyL after some more looking at the steps in bearing replacement. I had some noise in the driveline somewhere and planned on just the u-joints.

Bearings are cheap in the 1/2 ton, but how many tools will I have to buy to redo them?

I really appreciate the comments on the pitted ring & pinion gears, that will save me $250 for now...
