Re: Homemade Tonneau Cover
my tonneau cover is homemade. It is a steel frame made out of square tubing with adjustable legs (bolts) that fits inside my box. It can be adjusted so the top is flush with the top of my box sides. The top is 3/4" plywood wrapped with carpet underlay and tonneau cover material. The material is wrapped around the plywood and stapled on the bottom. It is pretty heavy but on the plus side 4 people can comfortably dance on the top. I will try to get some pictures in the next couple of days. It is snowing here today.

Re: Homemade Tonneau Cover
I looked at a homemade cover on a 55 Chev truck at a car show this weekend and it looked like 3/4 ply was used and it was heavy(guy was holding it up with a broken broom stick! Does anyone have pictures so I can get some ideas?
Thanks, Raymo |

Re: Homemade Tonneau Cover
I built one years ago for an 1989 S10 ( when the truck was new). I used plywood and covered it with vinyl. It was PITA and never did function right. It sagged, and needed a 2X4 to hold up the centre.
I had a wood box liner in the truck and had it cut down all the way around 3/4" to allow the cover to sit flush. It was hard to take off and store as well. Needless to say I just purchased a Extang cover for my 68. $229 at Jeg's and installs in about an hour.

Re: Homemade Tonneau Cover
I made one for my Cheyenne. I used C channel for suspended ceiling grids then put 3/4 ply wood over that. I still need to put vinyl over the top. There are a lot more pictures in my last page of my Cheyenne build thread.

Re: Homemade Tonneau Cover
Finally got some pictures of mine. As I said before it is pretty heavy. It is great security when travelling. I have an electric tailgate too, so when the power is off no one is getting in my box without a skil saw.
