No casting numbers on the shelf on the pass side?
Hey all,
I was working on my $300 suburban today and decided I'd check the casting numbers on the block since I had the alternator pulled off. I scrapped all the grime off and there they were. It was a Flint plant 350. Well my 84 K10 was sold to me claiming to have a rebuilt 350 in it. I've always been curious if it really was or if they previous owner just told me that and hoped I wouldn't check. Well I got a flashlight and a rag and wiped the shelf off, but its blank? No numbers on it. It's just shiny and smooth. I'm looking on the little shelf just behind and below the alternator. Any suggestions?

Maybe the block was decked when it was rebuilt shaving the numbers off in the process. Just a thought.

Re: No casting numbers on the shelf on the pass side?
Well you now know for sure the block was decked at some point so the engine has been rebuilt. There are more numbers on the flat spot of the block behind the drivers side rear head. that is the block casting number and will tell you if its a 350 or not but wont tell you exactly what it came out of.

Re: No casting numbers on the shelf on the pass side?
Thanks guys, I really didn't think about that. It's been a long hot day and I think my brain may have over heated! I have a lil mirror on a rod so I'll see if I can get it back behind there and see any numbers. If not I guess I won't know for sure until I pull the motor out when I change over to a LS.

Re: No casting numbers on the shelf on the pass side?
On the older blocks the number is behind the ds head but on newer blocks it's on the passenger side and on the flat close to the peak of the bellhousing.
I would guess for the front they must have been removed unless they are still full or something like paint or grease or whatever?
