Seatbelt swap question

When doing a seatbelt swap, do you also have to take the other half of the seat belt from the donor vehicle or can you use original belt plus newer style shoulder harness mechanism? Know what I mean?

Original was two lap belts that clipped together.
Can you use newer style shoulder harness setup plus other half original lap belt
