What to do for Winter ~ Need your thoughts

Not sure what to do with my truck this winter. I don't have a garage and during the spring and summer months it's been hanging out on the street. I have a place I could park it with a cover about an hour away, but I'd really like to have it around for when there is no snow on the ground and I need to haul stuff. We'll be renovating the bath this winter and it'll come in handy.

The street I live on rarely gets salted and I wouldn't drive it when we've got snow on the roads. So far it's pretty clean with minor underlying rust issues here and there. It's more of a monster than a prince, that's for sure. I've seen some folk say they drive theirs year round, but others have said "no way no how". Any tips on how to keep it clean in the winter? If I keep it here am I just asking for trouble?

Re: What to do for Winter ~ Need your thoughts

I think that it'll be fine sitting outside this winter, I know mine was fine up there for the 3 years I was in Great Lakes. I just made sure to take it to the car wash semi-often to get the salt off the undercarriage if I drove it in the slush up there. I didin't have a garage up there either, just a carport. Here they don't even use salt!! Its crazy. Then again, sometimes it doesn't snow enough to warrant having a snow plow either.

I don't drive mine in the winter either and last year I put a truck cover on it. It worked OK, but not great and this was a pretty good cover. Nothing beats a garage. I have a friend with a barn that I will keep it in this year with the cover on it in the barn.

Barnaby, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you keep it clean, I see no issue in running it through the winter

red71Cheyenne, I see you;re from Bremerton, WA. Are you familiar with the band MxPx?

It should be kept in a dry garage. If you use it on a nice dry day there will still be salt dust on the road. You can take a hose and spray it off good underneath when you are done as long as the outside water tap isn't frozen. Bottom line is that it will rust if used in the winter where salt is used.

keep it as clean as you can, ... in 3 yrs when the rust starts to bug you, sell it to someone who wants to repaint it and lower it..... then go look for another one

I definetly don't have a dry garage, so that's not going to happen at this juncture. It's either sitting in a driveway covered in the 'burbs, or sitting here on city streets getting cleaned once in a while. Dang, this is going to be a hard decision.

Re: What to do for Winter ~ Need your thoughts

keep good wax on it
keep gastank full and add stabil if you dont use it enough
on better days if possible have a hook up with your hose that you can use warm water to rinse it off with

If you rent a storage unit, be sure to take some antitheft measures or someone will be driving it through the salt for you.

Well, I'm stationed in Bremerton, from southwest MO originally. I've heard of the band, but never heard them play.

I live south of you about 1 hour, we only get snow here for about a week tops. I dont think they salt the roads but maybey they do in your area.
Anyway your biggest concern here should be rain for the next 9 months lol which if you dont drive your truck I would think a cover would be fine, if you do drive it then go to a car wash and pressure was it once a month.
