Re: Need to replace 72 3/4t leaf rear end
Worst case: you will have to move the spring mounts and shorten/lengthen the driveshaft. If you do a little homework first, you may not have to make any mods at all.
Before you choose a new rear end, take two measurements off your old one. You want to know the spring center distance and the pinion stickout. The stickout is the distance from the axle shaft center to the U-joint center. Take those dimensions and a tape to your friendly local salvage yard and start measuring. Ray |

Re: Need to replace 72 3/4t leaf rear end
a 14bolt from a 73-91 one ton will be the only true bolt in.. all others will need relocated spring perches or spring hangers from the donor truck.. a newer rear will be about 2 inches wider

Re: Need to replace 72 3/4t leaf rear end
I put a 73 one ton 14 bolt in my 69 4x4 and I had to move the spring perches. Not sure what it came from as it was already removed but the salvage yard said it came from a 73 one ton truck.

Re: Need to replace 72 3/4t leaf rear end
Does the 2 inch difference make any real change in the appearance of the truck?

Here is mine I don't think you can tell but a lot of people comment on how big the rear end looks.

What if I wanted to put a rear end out of a newer duramax how much work would that be for my 72 3/4?

Re: Need to replace 72 3/4t leaf rear end
Does it make a difference if it is from a 2wd or 4wd? It is also a 1 ton rear end and I have read that the spring perches do not have to be moved if it is a one ton. Can anyone confirm this?

an easy way to tell in the junk yard is one ton 14bolts have the shocks inboard of the frame. most likely the shock mounts will need changed on any axle that you swap. 2 or 4wd makes no diff.. pinion angle maybe. and yes i can confirm that a one ton 14bolt has the same 40.5" perch spacing as a 67-72.. as I helped a friend do it.. 3/4 ton 14b use a 42.5" perch spacing.. I am a bit curious of why you want to swap axles? ratio selection? Last edited by cr480r; 09-15-2010 at 06:07 PM. |
