newbie chevy 350 can you identify part.
haven"t torn down a chevy engine in 20 years.i have been marking everything keeping the bolts together and even been taking pictures.stuck on two things can you help me identify this part came out after i rolled the block over.i think it has to do with the oil pump.and there still seems to be a shiny piece sticking its head out by the end of the camshaft.i will attach a pic of the piece in question.other question how does the dam cam shaft come out.will it just pull out by the sprocket.i see three bolts at the back of it.square don"t have the right tool.after this clean it up and send to the machine shop.

Yes it is an oil pump drive shaft that goes between the pump and distributor.

Re: newbie chevy 350 can you identify part.
That is indeed the oil pump drive shaft. The three "bolts" at the cam location are oil plugs. They don't need to come out to remove the cam. If the cam is stuck, make sure the oil pump drive shaft "sleeve" has come out on the oil pump. It is a small plastic or sometimes metal coupler that connect's the oil pump stub shaft to the oil pump drive shaft.
This one is metal and pinned to the shaft. . Here the oil galley plugs are the pressed in type like freeze plugs. Most of them that I've seen are small pipe plugs with a square head. I hope this helps, Jeff.

Re: newbie chevy 350 can you identify part.
That oil pump driveshaft uses the old style nylon coupling sleeve. I would replace it with an aftermarket shaft with the steel sleeve. They aren't expensive and are a recommended upgrade.

Re: newbie chevy 350 can you identify part.
yes i surprised with a plastic sleeve.after some hard looking took out the fuel pump push rod and cam shaft came out easy.finally bare block.just soaking the piston tops in varsal to clean up the top and the ring groves.sending the block for hot tank ,honing, crankshaft, camshaft, pistons.will go to the machine shop .i will get them to check crank and cam to see if they need polishing.then get them to assemble pistons, crank, cam.i will do the rest not confident enough for the tolerances.
