starter grinding?

when i try to start my truck sometimes the starter will grind like something is catching, and then it will stop and spin free without the engine sometimes.. other times it turns perfect. i checked and both bolts are in good, so what could make it grind? it only started this the other day

Fly wheel might be missing some teeth or the starter might. or the starter might not be engaging.

so missing teeth could make it grind? it hardly ever does the spin free thing, most of the time it grinds a couple tries then starts good. i did tighten up one bolt and it made it not as bad, but now they are both as tight as they'll go

If the flywheel is ok, put a new bendix on your starter. Bendix is the piece that engages the flywheel. They should have one at your local parts store.
