Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
I thought it was time to resurect this Thread.
The Body work is all done on my 72 Short Fleet. The Body Shop that did the work, initially quoted me $3K for the Work. After getting into it, with all the issues, it ended up being approx. $1200.00 MORE. That wasn't a problem as I "Visited" my Truck 2-3X a week over the coarse of the 2 1/2 Months it was there and saw the work and knew they weren't yankin my chain. When the new quote came in, I straight up told the owner, I didn't have the extra $1200.00, and would he let me pay him $200.00 a month, until it was paid off. He agreed and we wrote up a Contract, and that bill will be paid off next Month. The guy did me right, by the Work and extending me a payment plan. My problem is I really don't want to go BACK to him for paint because, the estimate keeps going Up...and up....and up. Locally here, the paint estimates from 3 shops, for what I want are $4500.00-$6000.00. I have had 2 other vehicles painted by Macco. They were both fantastic jobs, but it all boiled down to what type of "Prep Work" was done underneath. The 1st Car, MACCO did the Body Work/Paint and it came out great. The 2nd vehicle my Friend did (plus past body work by the previous owner). Within 6 months after painting the paint was chipping off. Now the Shop that did my body work, said he had a guy come in with a 69 Camaro and they did the Body Work. Then they quoted a guy a price on Paint. The guy flat out told him, it was "too much", so he took HIS Car to MAACO. The shop owner (where they did the Body Work), said they did the whole car (Color Change) and the Interior. He said 5 years later it still looked fantastic and that HE couldn't have touched the paint on this guys Camaro, for anywhere NEAR the price MAACO quoted, which I believe was $3K. That being said, I took my Truck down to MAACO, and the Estimator, Painter, and 2 Body workers, that were there in 1994 and again in 2000, are still there! For a Complete paint job, SS Stripes on the Hood, and painting the entire Interior (same color as the SS Stripes), I was quoted $3K (or a little under). I figure realistically, I'm expecting about another $500.00-$700.00 in unexpected things to "Pop-up". So I know the consensus here, doesn't care for shops like Miracle/MAACO, but they've done right by me in the past. I keep thinking of when my local Body Shop was doing the Bed of my Truck. The Manager said he could have spent another 12 Hours, doing the Bed of my Truck. So at $70.00 an HOUR , that's FREAKING ANOTHER $840.00!!! I told him its just a "Daily Driver" and I'll be putting it into Shows once in awhile, and although they're trying to do right by me, it's NOT like the Bed of my Truck is so bad, it's "Waving" back at me. I could easily see the paint job at my local shop costing WAY MORE than $3K! When its all said and done, I'm happy with my Choice.

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
There is a HUGE difference between a $300 Maaco job and a $3000 job! They will put the time in the truck to make it what you want. Since you have experience with these guys personally and they have done you right in the past, I wouldn't hesitate. AND, for $3000 you can be a little pickier in the finish when you pick it up.

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
I'm confused....I thought the Maaco job was 3K and the shop was closer to 6K plus could be more so you are going to use Maaco because you've been happy with their work in the past....and then Vintagesteel basically said don't do Maaco and you were happy? Am I the only one confused

Those 2 other MAACO jobs were around $1200.00 a piece. I remember the 1st car, I had painted there. I had taken it in before I had an operation in the Hospital. My Wife would work a 12 hour day, and then stop by the shop and take Video of it and bring it home to me! She went in, to inspectit, because it was "supposedly" done. She saw that they had "Taped Around" the front emblem instead of removing it. She had them take it OFF and respray underneath. LUV that Woman!

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
Gonna go with the 2010 Camaro "Synergy Green", with Silver SS Stripes.
Inside Cab will use the same Silver, and it will have Red Pinstripping. Keeping that all in mind because the Truck revolves around the "Rat Fink" theme...Hence the name "RATIKLE".

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
Major stumbling Block today....
Went to Maaco about 6 weeks ago to get an Estimate. I did NOT have the Truck there, so this was Preliminary. I was told $3K-$3.5K. I could handle that. Fast forward to today. I go back in, just to "Clarify" a few details I missed before. Like I forgot to tell them I wanted the Bed, "Rhino Lined". The appraiser started spouting "Extras" for: Special Paint Taking off the Molding (I guess they were going to mask it off). Some BS about the color Silver and spraying it in that County and the EPA. Told me that the cost of Paint, JUST had an increase of $500.00. EXTRA to take the Bed off to spray the Cab. I said "You've GOT to be kidding me"! Her response was "No...a lot of people don't care about the bottom portion of their Cab" Within 5 Minutes the cost increased by 100% and was now at $6K and she "HOPES she could do it for that much"! When I 1st started this journey, the quotes I got from 2 local body shops were $8500.00 and $9000.00. That was for BOTH Paint & Body Work. Well the Body work is completed and for $6K that better include taking the Bed off and painting the Cab. Maaco just priced themselves out of a Paint Job, from ME! This may be a blessing in disguise because the Maaco I speak of is in another County and a 90 min drive over 2 mountains. The other 2 shops are a 20 minute drive away, where I could go and check the progress a couple times a week. I feel $6K is an adequate amount for a "Daily Driver" paint job. I'll keep you all posted what the next Paint Estimate is, but that will be in about 2 weeks.

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
Sorry to hear about that. If the body work is complete I don't see how a spray with paint could be more than 3-5K unless you're using very expensive paint. I used PPG paint and clear and NAPA mid level primer and sealer and only had a few hundred total in supplies including tape, tac cloth, thinner, prep, etc...

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
Well I got a shot of Redemprion today.
I took my Truck to a Custom Paint Shop about 20 miles from my House. I've seen this shops work around town and at all the local Car Shows. He told me that if HE painted it, he would give me an Estimate up front in writing and once I left his shop, that was it..no less...no more. He also said it would be about 3-5 weeks to complete it. He would take off the Doors, Hood, Cowl, Bed, Front/Rear Windows, and spray it all seperatly and bolt it back on, adjust, install Weather Stripping, Door Felts ect. He would order the paint and spray a "Test Panel" for me to look at, when I dropped the Truck off to make sure I liked the color. Bottom line was $6K OTD. I can live with that. The "Other" shop wanted to mask everything off and leave the Bed on and they HOPED they could do it for $6K!!! This is what I was looking for all along. The BAD NEWS (if theres any) is that he can't take it until End of October/Mid November, because he's currently doing a restoration on a 70 C-10.

Re: Price of a paint job nowadays?
Find out how he wants to get paid before you get too excited. I'd also watch the progress of that 70 to get an idea of his work ethic. And you may as well shop a bit more while you wait.

Pay when it's ready. His shop is meticulousley clean. He is in his late 50's to early 60's. In fact that 70 C-10 hes working on, the Customer brought him in a "Donor Truck", and he showed me what he has done so far. I'm very impressed. He also showed me a Volkswagen he just finished up (restoring). It was Flawless! I have no worrys about this shop!
