Re: cold weather starting tips for a noob!
If the rest isn't hooked up I'm thinkin the 4 barrels won't come in ,may need to bend it,if engaged and won't let em work. And for sure during the winter a factory type is better, slush splashing, blowing snow all the fun winter brings, with the front of the rad blocked for better heat ,i didn't bother to hook up the pipe from the manifold and the vac thermostatic control stripped it out long before, just used the factory breather in winter

It appears you have the carb with no choke housing. Instead, you should have a long link connected to a thermostat coil with is bolted directly to the intake manifold. I had one like that on a 1970 Impala. Still, the manual choke would hook up the same way - just hooks to the tab on the end of the choke lever - should work even better.

Re: cold weather starting tips for a noob!
update about ghetto carb. me and my new friend (mechanic guy that lives behind me) cut the wire ties off the carb. there was also a random vacuum hose just randomly laying on the manifold. things seem to be a little bit better but im not sold it will fix the problem. he said all i have to do now is just push it to the floor and that should engage the choke and it should start right up to the high idle. i'll report in the morning what happens.
he also suggested if that doesn't work to sell the QJ and get a holley 600 electric which im up for instead of tinkering/rebuilding an old carb. |

Re: cold weather starting tips for a noob!
If the truck runs OK after warm up, why would you spend $$$ on s new carb? Ask that mechanic friend to install a manual choke and see what happens - $20 vs. $400 - no brainer in my book. Just trying to save you more time and money, having had a few squares and many different carbs myself. ANY carburetor is not perfect - they are imprecise gas hogging devices, regardless of the brand. You will likely have to disassemble, clean, rebuild any carb after a couple years of driving.
Without a thermostat coil and link to the choke valve, I don't see how the choke will close at all - maybe gravity? |

Re: cold weather starting tips for a noob!
ok we seem to have a winner as far as a fix goes. i went outside this morning and gave it a full mash of the gas to the floor once and it started right up with the high idle. now of course we had it set WAAAAAY to high so i had to adjust it down. but sure as the world i let it sit for a couple three minutes and tapped the gas again and it kicked down!
only thing now, which this might be common on carb'ed engines on a cold morning, is a crap ton of smoke was coming out from the exhaust the entire time as well as some drops of water (condensation i hope). Last edited by blackbeaSSt; 10-12-2010 at 01:40 PM. |

Re: cold weather starting tips for a noob!
Is it smoke or steam? The condensation is normal.
If the "smoke" isn't colored (grey, black) I wouldn't worry to much about it, especially if it goes away when the truck is good and warmed up.
