Super leaky windshield

Hi guys, its raining in my Blazer! What would you guys recommend to seal it up? I am thinking the glazing compound would be good, but its so gooey. Any other ideas out there? I've heard not to use silicone. Thanks, Jeff.

Find the nearest windshield installer and have them remove and replace it

Re: Super leaky windshield

Are you sure that it is the windshield? Where is the leak? You know it isn't uncommon for the windshield to get the blame when it is the sheet metal.

Re: Super leaky windshield

I'd start with a new gasket.

Re: Super leaky windshield

Pull the windshield, inspect windshild frame it might be rusted out. After cleaning and repair, install winshield with new gasket. If you try to seal it up with silicone or whatever you may end up trapping mosture in there and cause it to rust faster.

Re: Super leaky windshield

This is an all newly refurbished windshield frame on the Blazer that I just restored. Its definitely leaking in around the windshield as you can see the water puddling in the gasket!! This is the windshield I had so much trouble getting installed as it wouldn't fit and had to do some grinding on the glass and the frame to get it in there. It has a new gasket, new glass and like I said, the frame is basically new.

Re: Super leaky windshield

Use self-leveling silicone. Basically it remains liquid long enough to flow to where the leak is, then it solidifies.

This is on the glass side right? I'm trying to keep all the silicone off the metal as I've heard it'll cause problems with the paint later on. I was going to use glazing compound on the metal side.

Re: Super leaky windshield

What about the urethane that glass installers use on the late models? I've also seen glass men use some kind of caulking that is injected between the glass and the gasket.

May have to stop at Safelite and ask them if they know what you are talking about. Was kind of thinking I might do that anyway as they couldn't get it in there to start with. I'd love to have it not leak at all. It just rains too much here.

I pull the rubber gasket back and it goes between the gasket and the glass, but some probably gets on the metal that's not seen.

Re: Super leaky windshield

You shouldn't have had to grind the glass to fit as it is in front of the frame when installed. One tip I got from the service manual is to carefully lay the glass on the frame and 'adjust' frame to fit contour of the windshield. It also says to apply sealer on the bottom and upper corners.

When I split the frame in half to sandblast and repair rust, I think I shrunk the whole thing a bit when I put it back together. The opening wasn't as big as it originally was and thats why the glass guys ground it down a little. They eventually gave up trying to get it in and I also had to do some opening of the frame itself. Thats all probably part of why it is leaking.

Re: Super leaky windshield

I would try some flowable silicone windshield and glass sealer or even black rtv. Since the rubber is new it is still flexable, use a dull putty knife and lift the edge of the rubber squirt some in and work your way around. Use a razor blade to clean off any that squeezed out after it cures. Might be better to remove the windshield and dry and clean the channel put sealer all around the glass and reinstall.

If your Blazer is already painted silicone won't be a problem.

Thanks, I had thought about pulling it, but worried the silicone would ruin the paint. If its already painted it won't hurt it?

Re: Super leaky windshield

RTV....if it is NOT the automotive variety, will react with the sheet metal. If you don't believe me, take a look at this picture. This is what non-automotive RTV will do.....all because a previous owner was trying to stop a leak. This is before I pulled it out of the trough....which is what you see. When I pulled it out, it was amazing that the front of the firewall stayed attached to the rest of the cowl.

Thanks Ray. I'm going to consult the windshield guys at Safelite to see what they can do for me. I know they also guarantee their work, so might be a good way to go.

Re: Super leaky windshield

This thread is useful, I just had new glass installed front and back; the new gaskets don't seal like the old one's did. Theirs places that you could slide a piece of paper between the metal and rubber I know water will get in there. Automotive RTV,self sealing if possable.

Re: Super leaky windshield

Ray's right, the wrong stuff will have a very strong smell. I always play it safe when I buy black RTV and make sure it meets GM specs.
