Radiator Support Mounting Question
I am rebuilding a 68 short box. It has been a while since I disassembled the rad. core support. I neeed to buy a new bushing and hardware kit and have noticed many vendors offer a kit for 67-72, while others offer a kit specific to the 67-68 models. I heard the holes in the frame mounts are smaller on hte 68? What shouls I use? The 67-72, or 68 specific? Will using the 69-72 kit put the support in a too high or low position? Maybe I'll call GMC Pauls. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks |

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
the rubber is thicker for the 69 and newer trucks. I believe you need the correct rubber to make the fender line up.

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
Cooters, I thought that may be an issue. Do you know how many spacers, etc. on each side? Maybe I just split all the supplied spacers in Hhalf?

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
If you have a 67-68 frame you will need the 67-68 core support kit. The 69-72 core support bushings will not work. Yah I have seen alot of kits say 67-72 but most will only work on 69-72.

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
I am building a 71 Chevy with a 68 front clip hopefully. The frame holes are larger than a 67-68, so do I weld them up so that I can use 67-68 core support bushings? If not will I have alignment problems with fenders, hood, cab etc.?

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
no need to weld the holes. The larger diameter will just allow more adjustment. You might need to shim the bushing or use the 69-72 bushings, but I think you will want to start with the thinner 68 bushings.

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
If you put a 67-68 front clip on a 69-72 use the 69-72 bushings. If you put a 69-72 front clip on a 67-68 then use the 67-68 bushings. It is the frame mountiing brackets that are different. Because when you get down to it the core supports and fenders are the same. The 69-72 fenders are just indented in the corner for the aluminum grill and the radiator support has the braket to mount the headlights out further. In fact most 69-72 core supports still have the holes for mounting the 67-68 headlights behind the brackets.

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
I'd like to bring an old thread back to life...
I have a 68 swb truck that I bought a while ago and now I have the front clip removed from the truck and I am wondering what year frame I have, is it 68 or earlier? I've take some pictures of the radiator support mounting brackets and measured the hole in them, hopefully someone can look at their frame and let us know what it is what. |

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
Looks like 69-72 to me with the large hole. 67-68 had a small hole.

Re: Radiator Support Mounting Question
Im falling into this category. The guys at Brothers believe I have a 68 truck on a 69 frame somehow. Does anyone know the diameter of the core support mounting holes on the frame between the 67-68 and 69-72? That would help me know for absolutely certain!
Many thinks if anyone out there has this info. My core mounting holes on the frame measure about an 1 1/8th inch in diameter. Thanks!!!!! |
