Too Fast Idle

The engine idle is OK til I run the truck a mile or two. Then it idles real fast. Does not happen all the time. Checked all the vac hoses. There is no leak. I turned the engine off, and restarted it. Then it idles OK. I think it is the vac. advance in the distributor hanging up. What do you think? I want a GM dist. Do dealers still them? Thanks
It idles about 100 rpm's faster. It has an electronic dist. in it. It has a rebuilt carb. I took the carb to a real good shop. It only idles fast after a high speed drive. It will idle fasts til I turn it off , and then turn it back on. If I race the engine up in the garage , and then back it off it wont idle fast. If I turn it off, and then back on it will idle at normal speed.

Re: Too Fast Idle

Sounds like the advance weights in the distributor are sticking. What motor is it? Stock points or HEI!!!

Re: Too Fast Idle

Need more info so someone can give you some tips.

Engine?
Carb?
Type of distrtibutor?

Check to make sure the butterfly valve is not sticking on you when it gets hot. You should be able to push it back if it's sticking. This is a fairly common problem on old quadrajets/rochesters that I've owned.

Check the vacuum advance by uplugging from the carb and using mouth suction see if it moves freely and returns all the way. Maybe a good cleaning may help if it doesn't return all the way.

You can check with the dealer but I'm pretty sure they don't carry anything older than 25 yrs unless they just happen to have it laying around. You can get rebuild kits to rebuild it if you want to stay with the original.

Re: Too Fast Idle

It seems to me if it is a dist problem it could idle a little faster then normal but not "real fast". I think it has to be somethimg with the carb. or throttle linkage. The choke may not be releasing, the secondary butterflies not closeing, or worn throttle shaft. I'm asuming it is a Q-jet but we don't know this yet.
