long bed to short bed- fleet side

I'm always one to say that you should hold out for the truck that you want instead of trying to chop something up to what you want. I am in the middle of chopping the bed of my '59 down by 19" to make it a short bed. I am being haunted by a steal of a deal '66 thats a long bed. I'd love to buy it, make it a short bed, lower it and drive it. no big nasty V8, I like the I6. I just know that i dont really want a long bed truck. How hard is it to chop down one of these fleet side long beds? What is the difference in bed length(in front of and behind the rear wheels)? Thanks guys

Re: long bed to short bed- fleet side

if youre pretty handy with your frame work and are capable of cutting the frame to size, the bed panels should be fairly easy for you to shorten. there have been quite a few members that have shortened their long beds, so im sure they will chime in and can give you some proper measurements and links to their build.

heres a link to a thread that was posted this past week with a slide of how he shortened his lwb. i hope itll give you an idea of what kinda work you would be looking forward to..

Your looking at 12" in the front and 8" of the tail end.

You'll want to take 12" out of the frame under the cab. You'll also have to move the rear cab mount back 12" and remove the forward bed mount. Then cut 8" off of the back of the frame.
