Neither. Sealer isn't necessary.

damn! just bought a 4.00$ tube of sealer. what is that loner, and where can i get it, and how much?

ya, I bought a Mr. Gasket chrome thermestat housing and the stupid thing leaks a lot! It sux! I tried putting a new gasket in there and still didn't fix it. Even tried filling the o-ring knotch with some gasket maker still leaks! I should find one of these o-rings and a new gasket and see if that works. I can't find my original thermestat housing either

I bought the same thing and used a gasket with the o ring, no leaks...

Over the years, I have used the T/stat housings that required gaskets and I had a lot of corrosion (Pitting) issues on my aluminum manifolds, due to them being made from a variety of trash metals. I now use billet T/stat housings that have O-rings in them and I have not had any leakage or corrosion issues. since everything is now aluminum, the bimetallic issue is not there. The O-rings work well and can be replaced if needed. If you are using an aluminum intake, then i would suggest a good billet housing. Then again if you are still using the factory intake, then a good gasket with the O-ring built into it works great. Felpro offers them to the parts outlets.

I don't recommend the Mr. Gasket chrome therm. housings. I had one on my for about 3 yrs. I noticed a slight leak one day, and found it was coming from the side! Apparently, antifreeze is corrosive to chromed pot metal. I replaced it with a stock GM aluminum housing with only a gasket, no sealant.

ryans69chevy, remove the o-ring and place the housing on a perfectly flat surface and you'll see why it won't seal. The chroming process warps the metal. If you have access to some kind of disc or belt sander, you can flatten the surface to make it seal. Like I said above, though, you'll have to replace it in a couple years.

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually did put it on a flat surface when I was changing gaskets a week ago and noticed it was't flat! So I tried looking for my original housing and couldn't find it. Junk yard will have to do.
