C-20 4x4?

I've been browsing different auto search websites and I've found multiple C-10's and C-20's that are 4x4. Are all of these trucks conversions? It seems fairly common. Can anyone explain this? Thanks.

Re: C-20 4x4?

Im not sure what you mean. They made half ton and 3/4 ton 4x4's. But I believe only the 4x4 Blazers were badged with a K (for 4x4)...Is that what you are talking about?

Re: C-20 4x4?

Oh yeah, I was referring to the trucks - sorry for not specifying. Well, I thought that VIN numbers beginning with a 'C' meant 2 wheel drive, while VIN numbers starting with a 'K' meant 4 wheel drive?

Re: C-20 4x4?

Oh Ok, you were talking about Vin numbers, There are quite a few that have been converted here on the board. Check out the 4x4 area. Im always surprised when I see this because real 4x4's are a dime a dozen out here.

Ive never looked at the vins on mine. Looks like swamps starts with a c. Smarter guys than me are already chiming in LOL.

Re: C-20 4x4?

CG, Swamp - thanks for the replies. Yeah, I purchased a C-20 that's a 4x4 and didn't do my homework until AFTER. So, when I looked up the VIN number it says that it was a 2x4 from the factory hence the 'C.' Swamp, is your truck stock?

Grabbed a flashlight and checked out the Vin on my 71 K20. It does start with a K.

Re: C-20 4x4?

I'm concerned cuz if its a conversion, was it done properly, ya know? Hope I didn't get in too far over my head, which to be honest, wouldn't take much. I've always wanted a classic truck and now I finally have one. I'm a rookie at turnin' wrenches- savvy, but a rookie. Ruh-roh!

Yes, all original 4x4 vin's start with a K if a chevy, and I believe it's TK if it's a GMC. Don't 100% quote me on the GMC as I haven't owned one, but I believe that's accurate. I do know all the Chevy's start with a K. Trevor

As far as i know my truck is a factory 4X4, i looked up the vin about 16'ish years ago when i got it from my stepdad and it looked proper, He bought it when it was around a year old. I guess i should go out tomorrow and find the vin on the frame and compare it to the glove box and cab while i'm at it. Going by my Proof of insurance based on the title my vin starts with CKE242J.

Kinda glad i just looked because i neglected to print up current proof of insurance for all my rides...Woops!

EDIT: I just found this posting, it shows my truck as Conventional cab, 4X4, V8. Not sure where he came up with the info but it explains my having 2 letters C and K.

Re: C-20 4x4?

CK is correct for a 4x4.... notice the K after the C, a 2wd is CE atleast for Chevy. I think different for GMC. That's what I meant by starting with K, sorry for any confusion. Trevor

Re: C-20 4x4?

I believe if your truck is a 72, a chevy will have an extra "C" in front of the vin and a gmc will have the "T". So in 72, a CK would be a 4x4...
They were all badged as c-20, or custom 20, etc... Blazer was the only one that got the "K" badge.

Re: C-20 4x4?

The Chevy "C" and the GMC "T" was added to VINs in '72.All '72 4wds will have a "K" as the second digit and 2wds will have a "C".Prior years will have those disignates as the first digit .

Re: C-20 4x4?

Thanks for the clarification guys! Looks like I must have a conversion of some sort. As for all of the other 'C' 4x4's I've seen on the internet, I would guess most are authentic then or are their owners maybe making the c/k vin mistake too?

Thanks for adding that Special K, I couldn't figure out why some of the sites listed the vins differently, But i knew that way back when, when i checked mine that it was proper, just don't recall what source i used as it was before i had a computer.

Re: C-20 4x4?

So i just looked up my VIN on my 69 4x4 3/4 ton. Starts CE249... Is there any other place the VIN would be listed on the frame to find out if the cab is not original to the truck? I know my truck was restored about 15 years ago so i guess its possible it could have been a cab swap or 4x4 conversion. Everything seems factory correct for the 4x4.

I have a "C10" cab on a "K10" chassis. If you're worried about whether it was done right or not, buzz the truck up to 55 and get on the binders. If the cab doesn't fly off, it was done right. Just about all you have to do to do it right is bolt the C cab on the K chassis.

Yes there is a partial VIN stamped on the chassis. Look at the top of the LHS (driver's side) frame rail, under the hood about a foot back from the steering box. I can't remember what part of the VIN is there but I believe it is something like K or C, plant letter, and sequence number.

Re: C-20 4x4?

Wait a sec...Chevynuts, I wouldn't write it off as a conversion just yet.

It was my understanding that Chevy didn't go to C and K nomenclature until '69 when the Blazer came out; every 4x4 1967 or 1968 was a C20 4x4 or a C10 4x4.

Am I right in that, or not?
