hey does the cheyenne/cst tailgate band cover up the chevrolet/gmc lettering already on some tailgates?
im looking for a used tailgate and was looking for a blank one to use the band on but if it covers all lettering then i can use any 67-72 fleetside tailgate.

It covers the stamped letters. All Cheyenne tailgates had the stamped letters hidden under the aluminum band.

If the tailgate band is put in the correct place, it will cover up the Chevrolet letters, but it will NOT cover up the indented area of a GMC tailgate, you would have to move it down a bit to cover it all up.

I put a Chevrolet band on a GMC tailgate. Im not sure about adjusting it up or down but it covered it perfectly. Im not on my computer or I would post a picture.

Yes the band does cover the stamped GMC and the indented area. I have taken the band off and the the stamped GMC is there. Here is a picture.

Is this the original tailgate? It should be white in the middle is the reason I ask.

Your tailgate band is down about a half an inch too much, the ammount of the indented area that shows.

The tailgate band is 6 1/2'' tall, measuring down from the break on the tailgate where the factory put them, the GMC indent is 7'', which leaves 1/2 inch showing. Every ORIGINAL I've seen has been this way. I'll try to find a GMC tailgate and measure it and I'll post a pic. For now this pic is off an original truck that has had the band removed, and it shows where the band was and you can see the extra area below the band was never covered by it.

The original posted question was will a band cover......The answer is yes. I believe we have established however you will have to slide it down 1/2 inch lower than the ones that came with a band to make it happen. Im sure no one will mind and it wont look off or bad!

If I remember correctly there are two different GMC tailgates, one with large letters and one with small letters. Maybe it would depend on which tailgate you have.

I was just trying to get the facts straight, and I said in my first reply that you need to move it down a bit. And then the OP came back and said he would like to know if what I had said was true, just trying to help out.

LockDoc, you are correct, the '67's had the smaller lettering, but as far as I know '68 to '72 were all the larger letters.

Yes I believe it is the original tailgate but not the original paint. You are correct the band covers all but about 1/2" of the indent at the bottom. I had not noticed this before.
