Motor Mount Tower, do you recognize?

Hi All,

While in the process of my 700r4 swap I thought I would correct a few other problem areas, you know how these projects snowball. The PO. did some things I wasn't happy with, one being the way the passenger side motor mount tower was attached. Someone had drilled some new holes and bolted up this tower. The odd part was the upper flange on this tower was on the bottom side of the frame rail, not sitting on top. I never quite understood why but I thought I would correct this, well now I understand. When you sit this mount on top of the frame rail and align the holes there is no way the bottom hole will line up on the crossmember. Actually no combination of holes align from the frame rail to the crossmember. Also the engine is not even close to the mounting pad.

My question is this the correct passenger side V8 small block tower for a 66? It looks quite a bit different than my driver side tower. I would assume they would be symetrical. I'm guessing it's a passenger car mount, the 283 came from a car (so I was told).

Those are the ones i had on my 62 when i got it, i think that they are the same.

Hey there.....I just went and looked.......I have the same issue and I remember posting about this before. I went and looked. P/O told me my 'burb was a 6-cyl originally.......that is a six mount. Mine are all cobbled up to make the v-8 work. Here is a pic of my pick-up showing the correct mount. You cant see the whole thing but you can tell the angle is much different and it overlaps the frame much more.

Is this a 6 cylinder mount hack job? This is my new 66 GMC that someone stuck a small block v-8 in. This didn't look factory to me, so I'm wondering how it's supposed to look. Excuse the filth, I'm working on cleaning it up.

Anthony's looks nice compared to mine!!! Spacer!!! They just welded mine to the edge of the frame.

However, you can observe my 95a alternator and nicely degreased fuel pump!

Hey fella's, thanks for the quick responses.

Protrash, that picture of your mount was just what I needed. My driver tower looks just like yours. The emboss/raised area is continuous from the top flange to the motor mount area. The mount in my picture dips down before it reaches the motor mount pad. I knew this mount was wrong.

Now the 64 dollar question, how hard to find and how much will it set me back? Maybe someone needs this 6cyl tower...

Hey Dave......I dont believe that these are too difficult to find. I could be wrong, but I think maybe the 67+ are the same. I'll ask someone tomorrow that works for a restoration place. He will know. There are plenty of aftermarket options also. I like the CPP mount. Ive considered it after laying under the truck trying to get that bolt up into the motormount while my buddy jacked the engine up and down!!! I think the aftermarket mounts use the 'bolt-thru' type mount.

Someone did the same thing to the passenger side motor mount on mine. The edge that bolts to the frame was cut off and someone mounted it with the mount tower going underneath the frame. Who knows what people are thinking when they do these sorts of things.

The 230 and 250 6 cyl mounts are symmetrical and the same as small block v8 mounts.

The 292 L6 has the passenger side offset further forward than the driver side mount. I've not seen the 292 mounts side-by-side with the other sort, but it makes sense that the passenger side 292 mount is different.

So I would bet what you have is a 292 passenger side mount hacked to work with the v8.

The correct mount towers are pretty easy to come by, I'd go search one out.

I agree here. I swapped out my small block V8 283 for an inline 6 250 and I used the motor mounts from the 283 for the 250 and I had to adjust nothing. The inline 6 does have an added bumper to even up with the mounts for the 283, but they are the same.

I have a set of stock towers that I took off my '64'. It was a 230 6cyl truck and I'm going with an LS6 motor so I won't need them. They are powder coated black because I did them when I had the frame coated. PM me if you want them and we can work something out.

Mine wouldn't line up either-I think it may have been wrecked at one time? I used a hydraulic jack between the engine and frame to get the last bolt in, and once I started totighten them down, everything lined up fine.

Those are exactly like the ones I'm using on my 60 GMC. They came from the donor vehicle, a 86 GMC with a 350 which is going into my vehicle. Several people on here said these mounts would work fine on my frame as long as I added a 1inch shim between the mounts and the frame. You see the old frames are 1 inch shorter in height than the newer ones such as the 86 where i got mine. The 1inch shim brings it right up into the proper spot and everything is then good. Mine didn't have holes as the old v6 had a totally different mount in another area, so I'm drilling my own holes, but it fits great in its natural spot and that won't be a problem at all.

Yes, those are 292 mounts in the original question, and they are still in demand by us inline guys. You SBC guys can sell them when you put the correct mounts in...don't scrap them please.
