Quick note besure to check the ground wires! Electronics don't work well with bad grounds. Just moving parts or the distributor could get a good bond that time oxidizes or oil stops. Run a wire to the hold down clamp to a good ground.just my 2cents

Heat sink grease is not to insulate the module from the distributor. It is designed to help conduct the heat from the module to the distributor. Without the grease or any form of heat sink, the module would burn up in a short amount of time.

The purpose of the dielectric grease is to dissipate heat from the module to the distributor housing... without the grease the ignition module will fry....

Yellow Cheyenne and vfrdude thanks for the clarification. I knew it was needed just had a misunderstanding of purpose. That is why this board is great. I think I actually knew the right answer at one time but that was several books ago. You know my bookself is full. If I add a new book(something I've learned) one of my old books(something I use to know) falls off the shelf. To bad I can't add a bigger hard drive in my head.

One good thing about points, they won't make you walk without telling you about it first.

It drops the 12V down to I believe 7V for the old points coil. Since the HEI needs a solid 12V source, it should be disconnected and/or removed.

The resistor wire does drop the voltage but I believe the main object is to set the current(amps) level running through the coil. If you put a staight wire from the battery to the coil you would burn out the coil quickly and the points would burn much faster. The old mopar and ford used a ballast resistor right on the coil, A big square ceramic type wire wound resistor.
