Question Simple front bag setup-Some opinions and help?

Hey everyone, Merry Christmas!
I had some questions about bags as I do not know much at all about them, I've read a lot but most set ups are full air ride laying frame or something. I'm thinking of a much simpler set up so here goes....
Can someone school me on what would be a good idea, pros and cons, /plan/work/cost for putting some bags up front on my 2wd 1980 rcsb?
I was thinking of doing a 4/6 but with the LS oil pan and terrible roads in MA, I was thinking adjustability may be the better option? What do you think? Whats a good, simple set up? I keep hearing about schrader valves? I already have a flip kit for the rear and DJM 3in drop spindles for the front.
Thanks for any help!

Re: Simple front bag setup-Some opinions and help?

I don't know prices really because they change depending on where you buy.
But you will need:
Air bags.
Air lines and fittings.
Plates or cups (which allow you to bolt the air bags to the lower control arm and spring perch.
A compressor
An air tank.
And air valves (probably 1/4" or 3/8").
On the front You can get away with two valves. One to let air in, one to let air out.
But the prefered method is two valves for each wheel.

I hope this helps

Re: Simple front bag setup-Some opinions and help?

I just checked out ***************** and quoted parts for a front bag setup and the absolute cheapest (without compressor and tank) is around $360 bucks, and more realistically you'd probably have to spend $450 at the low end.

What oil pan? With an F-body oil pan, the x-member is the lowest point. I wouldn't go through the effort of swapping in bags for a 4/6 drop unless they were for the rear to allow additional capacity.

Hm, I didnt realize the f-body pan was that useful. Maybe I'll have to rethink, I dont know, Im new to all this lowering stuff so I was thinking that might be the way to go. Do you mean helper bags? Do those raise and lower the truck at all or just help with towing?

try Airbagit.com You can order 4 airbags for 180.00, the front bracket kit for !29.00 and the rear (for my 66gmc) 129.00 around $450.00 this would get you started and you can add pump, valves, etc later, right now just use a schrader valve. here is a link to mine I just did it and only did the rear, will add the front later. Actually we have a kit includes bags, brackets, shocks and fittings for 300.00. Then depending what you want to do for the control system it can go up from there

The front cups aren't even the right size for our trucks that they send you.

You can do a flip kit/6" drop in the rear & install 'helper' bags ('air over leaf' kit) to have additional load capacity vs just the leaves by themselves.

A 4" front drop is 3" spindles & a 1" dropped coil. You could use bags in place of the coils but it's definitely not necessary.

Bags could be used in this application to raise the vehicle for obstacles if that's the goal. I just don't think it's practical to expect to be able to raise it up fast enough to avoid road rash when driving. Slow/no speed? Sure. At speed w/consistency? I doubt it.

As others have warned..... avoid AIM/Chassis Tech.

Re: Simple front bag setup-Some opinions and help?

Yeah I have a 3/5 kit that came with the truck, from DJM. It consists of 3in drop spindles and a flip kit. After looking at some pics I think it looks weird sometimes and want the front to sit just a little lower than the back....but the DJM kit looks like the front is a little higher which i hate (our fenders don't help) so i was just thinking of putting bags in the front so i could get the front height perfect with good ride quality. but keep the opinions and options coming because i haven't made up my mind and am still learning, very new!

Re: Simple front bag setup-Some opinions and help?

If I were just looking for a bit more drop up front, I would consider cutting a half or full coil from the stock spring. Follow that with a good set of shocks and you should be fine.
