OD trans and brake booster from a 97?
I have the 97 GMC my daughter recently wrecked and am wondering what to do with it. I have the 69 Chevy needing a power booster/master cylinder and a trans.
The 69 has a mild carb'd 350 and 4.10 gear. While it has a plain t350 trans in it when the gas prices go up I give more thought to the benefits of OD. It's a long way away from being ready to drive but I have these parts now so why not. I can adapt the brake booster and since it bolts up close to the firewall I think I'd like that better anyway. It's less than a year old by the way. The trans is something else to consider. Being a 97 it's a 4l60E? and electronically controlled? How would I go about adapting that and the speedo to the 69?

Re: OD trans and brake booster from a 97?
I would think the booster would be fairly easy ,just get the pushrod length right. The trans however is another story . it requires a cotroller to make it shift and it will also have to have a TPS for part throttle downshifts. The whole drivetrainwould be nice in there with the fuel injection and would not need much more electronics than just a trans install to make work. There is a few copanies that make a stand alone harness for the 4l60e but they are pricey. The od idea is a good one and maybe a 700r4 or better yet a 200r4[same length as the th350]. Since your in the area maybe you could talk with Ron Q. @ Searcy auto salvage. He is a friend of mine and is a real car guy as well as a nice man to deal with. Jim

Since you have the whole 97 wouldn't be easier to swap the heads, fuel injection and trans or even complete engine/trans combo? You already have the computer and harness and having the donor truck would really save $$ and gas running back and forth picking up parts you need but missed. Hard to beat fuel injection and OD trans for gas mileage.
I haven't done this but do remember seeing threads on tpi swaps.

Re: OD trans and brake booster from a 97?
Well I really wanted this truck to be "low tech" as in NO ecm, no injection, no sensors, etc. Just a basic truck. Yes I know all the benefits of late model fuel injection and engine management but I wanted to get back to a qjet and distributor and twist on it myself like the old days.
The truck currently has a 4.10 gear. That'll be fun but with high gas prices I want an alternative. I also have a 3.08 open rear end I can put in if necessary. I'm not going to spend a lot trying to use the OD. There is a controller and speedometer converter to think about. Just kicking around the idea.

You can run the 4L60E with a 91-93 vintage stand alone diesel trans controller or program an older PCM like the 16197427 from the 94 & 95 trucks to run the trans as well for very little cash.

Hate to steal a thread but, 68TT could you give some more info on those controler options you mentioned? I have some of those 4l60e laying aroud. I also have some that are from the 4.3 type bellhousing as the ls seris would not work as easy because of the pump depth. Jim

Re: OD trans and brake booster from a 97?
Thanks TT but the thing is I already have the engine I want in the truck and it's freshly built. No vortec here. I am interested to here about standalone tranny controllers though.

The newer 93-95 OBD-1 PCM's integrated the transmission control functions into the same computer that runs the engine. These can be found much easier and can be reprogrammed to run just the electronic trans fairly easily if you have chip burning equipment and software. Thirdgen.org has a bunch of great info on chip burning and what hardware & software to use for the job. There used to be a great site for this but the page no longer exists. The cached info helps a little but none of the links or pics work. http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...ient=firefox-a
