Carb Help

I have a 66 c10 new 350 crate engine stock. The problem is shut it off for over 10 min before restart. It spins over a lot before it cranks carb is flooding. It had a new eldebrock I thought the carb was bad traded it for a new Holley same problem. Ive tried a regulator a fuel pump carb spacer still no difference. The fuel pressure in the line rises after shut off I notice this buy taking the fuel line lose at the carb. Fuel was shooting out like a rocket. Any help please driving me crazy ps my fuel pump just has an inlet and outlet no return.

Re: Carb Help

plumb a low press gauge into the fuel line at carb inlet & see xactly what the pressure is. sounds like the fuel line is run too close to an exhaust component & the heat is causing the fuel press to rise. just a guess unless the fuel pump is bad.

Re: Carb Help

7-10 lbs, should use a regulator, he`s just blowing fuel past the needle and seats both eldebrocks and holleys should be limited to 6-lbs.

I believe jewing said he's tried a regulator (but didn't say what it was set at). I run an Edelbrock and I put on a regulator set at 4 lbs which didn't help the hot re-start one bit. Nor did setting the floats lower, nor did installing an Air Gap manifold. I didn't try a spacer. My engine does not run particularly hot 180+/-. Hot restart at least for the Edelbrock is pretty prevalent from what I've read over on ChevyTalk.

The only thing I found that helps was to adjust my starting "technique". I found that holding the throttle about 1/3 to 1/2 open helps the engine fire after a few turns-still not instantaneous like the cold start-but better than cranking til you worry about the battery. I think its like the way I was taught to start a flooded engine, the technique in that case being to hold the throttle wide open while cranking (don't pump, just hold open).

If you haven't already tried it, jewing, just for giggles, give it a try.

Still not a cure for the boiling (or whatever it is we have) but has helped the restart for me. BTW, I don't see how the gas cap would cause the problem. Our trucks use a vented cap and if you happened to have the non-vented type I think it would cause a fuel starvation problem

Re: Carb Help

Run a three port pressure regulator, 3/8 line to the carb, 5/16 back behind the pump, limit the presure to five lbs, this will help bleed off the pressure quicker after shut off, Pressure after shut off is normal..yours just seems to be a little high, mechanical pumps do relieve pressure it just might be quality control thing with some MFG`s.

Cool Re: Carb Help

If all of the above fail try using a thick insulated carb base gasket...The other issue might be the ethanol content in the fuel. It causes a lot of issues with carbuerated engines.

Re: Carb Help

I bought a summit brand intake when I did my engine. A old timer told me the intake was so thin and cheap. The heat would get to the carb even with the spacer. I bought a good Edelbrock. Installed it problem solved with out the carb spacer. Runs stronger too I guess you get what you pay for. Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!
