Wheel Bolt Patterns

Someone help,
I bought some meats with some old school aluminium mags, that came off a 72 Monte carlo, and I went to put them on one of my 72 cheyenne's --- but they don't fit ???????
I always thought that Chevy only had one 5 lug bolt pattern....
Can somebody clarify this for me.

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

They have atleast 2 that I know of- 5x4.5 and 5x5 I think are the numbers.

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

That is correct, 5 on 4 3/4 (car and S-10) and 5 on 5 (big car and trucks)

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

In the same vein, Toyota has two 5-lug patterns....like the Celica and Camry use different spacing. Ford trucks, specifically the '83 models could have the passenger car spacing on an F-100, but not necessarily. I had an F-100 that had the regular 5 on 5.5 pattern that Ford has used for years.

Even though the later model GM full-size trucks use a 6-lug pattern, we can't just swap them onto our 70 and earlier trucks without some adaptation.

Ain't life fun?

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

Seems odd to me, because I would have sworn the Monte Carlo would have the big car/truck pattern....

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

Pretty sure the Impala & Caprice were the only "big" bolt pattern cars. Its crazy that there had to be so many different patterns. It sure would have been nice if the car companies just had a couple...

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

Here's a drawing that shows how to measure from lug to lug. I made a checker from a piece of wood and two short wooden dowels. If it drops in you know the wheel will fit.

The 5 on 5 "Big Bolt" patteren also was used on fleet cars such as Taxis, cop cars and anything that would see heavy duty. You can also find them on Caprice convertables. The disk brake rotors/hubs are interchangable with 5 lug 1/2 ton trucks too.

Very true, and if you look for the cop cars, you may find an interesting rally wheel, they are normally black, but some paint and center caps/trim rings...and you have an interesting truck wheel.

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

Does this mean that rallys off a late model van will also fit or did they change after a certain year?

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

Van rallys are usually narrower. I run 8 inch truck rallys on the rear and 7 inch van rallys on the front. They look the same other than the inch difference in width.

The round cooling holes like kinda neat. What width were they available in, 7" or 8" or both?

Maybe it is both.

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

I got tired of trying to remember.....senior moment I guess....

Went to a local rod shop and bought a set of 4 plastic templates that will line up and show the sizes.

Cheap way, Les Schwab has a tire and wheel guide for free that lists most vehicles with diameters, offsets and alot of usefull info.

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

I'm looking at a set of custom wheels on a 2005 impalla, will this bolt pattern fit my 72 1/2 ton stock 5 lug truck?

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

wow... searched up a 6 year old post on your phone!
2005 Impalla would be front wheel drive so even if the bolt pattern is right (not likely) the back spacing/offset would be WAY off. You wouldn't be ablt to turn the front wheels all the way from lock to lock.

Re: Wheel Bolt Patterns

for what it's worth, van rally wheels are 6 1/2" wide ... truck rally wheels came in 7" and 8" widths ...
