Re: help with details of 68 c20 4x4

Transmission will be a SM465 and the axle is the Corporate axle referred to as the HO52. It would be a 4.10,4.57,or maybe deeper. With the 307 I'm betting 4.57. I'm pretty sure that would be a 307. I'm drawing a blank. Does it have an oil fill in the front of the intake?

Re: help with details of 68 c20 4x4

Engine could very well be a large journal 327, though one of the choices in 68 for the K20 was a 307 engine. The 327 was a upgrade option.

The transfer case is a Rockwell T-221
The transmission is a SM465
The rear axle is a full floater Eaton H052
The front axle is a Dana 44
Gear ratio is more than likely 4.57

1968 K20's are kind of scarce.

Re: help with details of 68 c20 4x4

Thanks for straightening me out,Vectorit. Does this truck have the SPID? If so and no engine is listed, and the VIN starts with KE2,the engine would be a 307 which will have the oil fill into the driver side valve cover. If still original the oil fill will be in the rear with a tube extending up next to the air cleaner.

Re: help with details of 68 c20 4x4

NP Special-K.

Not sure how you could tell a 307 from a 327 from a distance, since they are practically identical from the outside.

I can say that my original 327 has an oil fill tube in the intake manifold, just in front of the water neck. A large journal 327 will have a larger harmonic balancer, and it won't have a vent next to the distributor in the block.

Everything else on the engine could have been changed out in it's life time, such as brackets, valve covers, intake manifold, or exhaust manifolds.

The heads as well. But, it they don't have mounting holes in the front of them for brackets, then they are the older versions that could be original to the truck. (smaller valve types, which in IMO work best in this kind of set up).

Here are some notes I have, and in no way am I implying that these are gospel. Just notes of mine I picked up some where, and maybe they can help you out.

3932388....327.....69....2
3932388....350.....69....2 or 4
3933180....327...68-69...2

These numbers are typically found on the bell housing portion of the block.

Other tip offs, would be a heavy duty radiator, upper radiator hose made of metal, canister type oil filter, four barrel, but again this stuff can disappear over time.
So, unless you can decode the castings, which are not a 100 percent bet on what you may have. The only way to know for sure is to disassemble the engine.

Re: help with details of 68 c20 4x4

you posted a pic while I was typing up that long winded response...

Those heads look period to the truck.
Personally... The air cleaner, and two barrel carburetor would sway my opinion towards a 307.

Can you post a picture of the harmonic balancer? That would rule out small or large journal.
