Re: better gas mileage

For us and yourself, if you can get some engine pics so can better see what you have and help with the changes, internally it will be a crap shoot without dismantling.

Re: better gas mileage

My susggeston would be to replace intake manifold, first off its a high RPM manifold, so it will kill the low end, you can try that carb on a edelbrock manifold (square bore manifold), or if you happen to find a spread bore manifold buy a rebuilt quadrajet. you have HEI which is good, while changing out manifold replace your thermostat housing as well from the looks of it, you can jet that ( 600 ) carb down two sizes, I think they came with 68/72 step it down to 64/68 and retime it all.

Re: better gas mileage

Your distributor. looks to be new.

Just noticed your Distributor is in backwards, if its to be politically correct, it needs to be rotated so that the vacuum dashpot is on the right side and your wiring tab on the dizzy is on the left side. But wait until you make manifold change if its running right now.

Re: better gas mileage

yea me and my brother put that in, we know its backwards but it wouldn't go in the other way. the motor caught fire just after they built it ten years ago after the 350 blew up. Because of the leaky holly it burnt all of that up thats why they sold it to me. we replaced everything on the top of the motor and built the holly in about the past 4 months.

Re: better gas mileage

Question is why would`nt it drop in the other way, its easier to drop the HEI in without the cap on, they sit close to the fireway, then put the cap on. In your case so far as it goes is just clean up and change a few top end pieces to get some better MPG out of it.

Have you referenced the numbers on that carb, it doesn't look like a center squirter carb which is what the 660's were if I'm not mistaken. May be a useable carb on your 305. Did they give you any cam specs or a cam card?

Re: better gas mileage

That looks like a 600 cfm Holley to me. That should be just fine on a 305 with a jet change as Rich 5150 69 mentioned. You really should do something about all of that rubber fuel hose there. That really isn't safe at all. You want to have as much steel fuel line as possible. One of these will help you make the transition from the drivers side of the carb to the passenger side where the fuel pump is.

It looks to me like you have a lot of small things to address that should help you with gaining some mpg's. Once you get a good dual plane intake manifold on there, you'll need to get the carb adjusted properly and the timing set correctly. That should help. When you get top that point, let us know and someone will guide you in the right direction.

Re: better gas mileage

we did take the cap off and played with it for all of 3 hours and couldn't get it to go in any other way, we thought it was weird to. they did not give me any specs at all, where would i look to see what size it is and i will check. there is steel fuel line until it gets above the water pump them it turns to rubber which is supposed to have a fuel filter there but my messed up got to get a new one. also a man told me today that all c10's came with 4:10 gears in 66 unless it was automatic is that true.

Nope, in fact not too many 66 c10's came with 4.10, alot of them came with 3.73, but could be ordered with any gearing.

Re: better gas mileage

with all due respect, Janderson - have you attempted to do anything suggested in these threads or do you just intend to keep sending us on goose chases?

personally Im lost on why your immediate concern is fuel mileage based on 2005 pictures that show theres quite alot to be done in your driveway before the truck should be driven periodically, much less daily!

Weve given you quite a bit of guidance and suggestions and asked for specific pictures to help ID what you have, yet you continue to throw up more random question after random question based on misrepresented information your getting from unknown and unreputable sources.

help us help you......

Re: better gas mileage

the camera dateing is messed up those pictures were taken 2 days ago the truck has been driven weekly. As to there being a lot to do there is a lot to do but it has everything it needs to run and that is what i am aiming for right now. i am just trying to get a plan as to where to go with this truck and have been asking general purpose questions about stuff that i don't know. If ya'll need more pictures let me know of what, i thought those were sufficient. about the bad info i was trying to buy a parts truck with the discussed parts today but he was saying that the trucks didn't come with certain parts on them. the only other info i have got is from the man who sold it to me. I don't have the money to do alot of the small things that are needed but not urgently(17, small budget) i am just trying to get it able to drive about 14 miles twice a week.

Re: better gas mileage

pull rear end cover and count ring and pinion teeth, a performer manifold, a 200-4r will swap in place of most th350s without hard mods, or 700r4 with mods. Learn to tune the carb. How many mpg's is get now?

Re: better gas mileage

Find the right size air filter for your housing, buy two of them and some threaded rod and stack them on top of each other.

One possible reason for running too rich is that your teeny air cleaner is acting like having your carb choke partially closed.
