Update on the 66 SuperPro project
Fortunately things have been busy at work, so about all I've managed to accomplish is getting the headers coated and back here to put on..
They came out really nice. 1-7/8" primaries 38" long, 52" to the back of the slip collector puts the 4" to 3" reducer right at the back of the trans cross member. Plenty of room for the mufflers and turn outs New plumbing is almost done, changed gear in the centersection to a 4.71 so to not beat up on this motor too much. With a 33" tire it ought to trap 6650 if everything works as 'expected' and was dead on the HP peak on the dyno. One thing I have managed to accomplish,, I've made a hell of a mess out of the shop! With Firebird not finished with track repairs there's no race this weekend,, wife is gone to SoCal for a visit, MAYBE I'll make some progress. If nothing else just clean up this mess!

On the ProStreet post you have a great looking dual quad small block in on of the shots, what are the states on that sweet bullet and where did you get those sick valve covers? Thanks and good luck this season.

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
65 the headers started life as the Headman Hustler 1-7/8" weld-up kit with the Stal adapter flange,, made it through 2 tubes and I turned it over to a shop that builds custom headers. More time and patients than I was willing to invest. By the time they were coated and bolted on,,,, I bet I have a grand into them including kit, extra tube / j-bends to fix 'my' design, reducer cones, O2 bungs, fab work and coating.
you want the total bottom to top on 'that' motor...... I think it's detailed in one of Supers Engine Analyzer posts, but here goes 436 cu. in, 666HP on a reputable SuperFlo dyno. Not conservative, not exaggerated,, but repeatable. It began life as a bare GM '509' 400 casting that was missing main caps, but sonic checked with good wall thickness. Had it decked to 9.000, Torque plate bored & honed for a 4.165" bore, clearanced for a 4" stroke, added splayed main caps, and 'hard block' filled to the bottom of the waterpump holes. Spent a STUPID amount of $'s on what is still nothing but a stock casting with a bunch of band-aides wrapped around it. In hindsight,, I should have just started with a Motown or Dart block. but hindsight is always so crystal clear ain't it! Rotating assembly is a Eagle 4" stroke crank (not by choice, it was just what I had at the time) Lunati 6" ProMod I-beam rods, JE 13cc pistons and JE mo;y ring packs. ATI neutral balance damper and flexplate on each end. As a BTW,, took 3 slugs of mallory to get the assembly in balance. Heads are just a set of old design box-stock AFR 220 castings. Flat milled them to 68cc is the only thing done to em. Added Crower .40/.10 shaft rockers. Not a lot of tricks,, just titanium retainers Isky springs and the shaft rocker system that would be anything other than 'normal' . AFR may advertise the 220s and 227s "will accept standard rocker systems" but 'accept' and having correct rocker geometry are apparently two different inturpretations of the word 'accept'. IMO the 220s demand a offset rocker and shaft is the only way to go there IMPO. Cam is a Crower roller E-42834 264° / 276° @ 0.050, .679 .677 lift 108° LSA I put it in on a 104CL again nothing real trick or out of line for a race sbc. In fact this is probably a little small for the big inch sbc. Intake is a Holley ProDominator tunnel ram with a handfull of epoxy inside to smooth out the transition from upper plenium to runners. Done by a friend of mine I bought the intake from. I'm told it will make it a little more 'throttle responsive' to throttle stop opening. I really wanted to set a matched pair of ]ProSystem 4150s on it,,, but dyno day and time / $'s thing got in the way. A pair of Proform 750 is what I ended up with on dybno day and we spend over 2 hours getting the thing tuned right (friggin PIG pfhat out of the box) That's it, no real tricks Made 666HP @ 6400 and 588 lb ft of torque @ 4900 usinf VPs C-12 fuel First trip to the track it wemt 11.0 with a easy launch, rolling into the throttle and 'thought' I was easing into a 11.50 pass. Next pass tried a transbrake launch and exploded an axle. Have all that fixed and finished up and am adding a QuickData data logger and hope to be back on the track first ADRA race that is coming here January 8th. Oh,,, you talking about these rocker covers? Not sure which pictures your looking at. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRO-141-801/

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
Wow very nice, 666hp that's a devils small block. Thanks for the insight, sounds like you've been drag racing awhile. I'm hoping to get out for the first time this year, been waiting half a life time to play. The $$$ sure flies out the window, still got the family to think about. But we'll get there.
Post up some times in the New Year sounds like your headed for the low 10's, maybe 9's??? knock on wood. Thanks for the great reply, and those were the covers I asked about, they look great. Mike

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
Mike that motor took my 2700 pound Nova to high 9's (it was the backup motor for the Nova and has been sitting on the stand for 2 years) At 3450 and an efficient setup it would easily make mid 10s in the truck. BUT,, the truck roll bar cage wasn't built with NHRA rule book in mind and isn't legal for anyting under 11.50. So it's a throttle stop baby and will be dialed to 11.75 and no firesuit, no neck collar no 2layer gloves or any of the other BS the Nova and low 9s require... it's my 'summer' time racer for here in hell.. errr umm Arizona. :-) When all the heavy suit is comfortable, (winter) I'll play with the quicker toys.

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
I hear ya, don't take the fun out of it. I assume your truck is a driver as well? I just got a 563 hp small block, and mathematically high 11's could be achievable. I don't want to put all the extra gear in it. Course that's where my challenge will be, dialing it in....but that's what I'm looking forward to, perfecting the package. Like I said good luck in January. Later

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
Man your small block is making the same power as my big block!!! Im going to put my truck on a diet after i get my cage in. But, i'm only doing tubular control arms, etc. etc. I want to keep it as street looking as possible. I think i can get it down to around 3700 or so. I did the 11.30's spinning, so i think there's some high 10's in it... Can't wait to see what your truck will run this new year. That cam seams a little small for your small block, but makes great power for your combo. Do you plan upgrading the cam later? Love your truck btw

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
$100 doesn't surprise me much, i's been on a steady rise since 2006 (at $90 a slug back then). I mean look at what all heavy metals have done in the last few years. Makes you want to choose components wisely eh! I've got a ultra light crank here that has 5 slugs in it! OUCH!!!!

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
Doesn't make those billet cranks look to bad after you buy a 500 piece and then spend $400 on the balance.

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
I had a set of off the shelf 1-5/8" supercomps for a 70's Nova. Had to relieve the top frame rail in a couple of places to make them clear. But the clearance issue is worse with a head like the AFR's that raise the exhaust port almost 3/8" They worked fine for the (considerably less than) 500HP 383 that was in there.
Anything larger than a 1- 3/4 primary is going to have to have the Stal adapters i believe. Wait I take that Back, we just put a set of 1-7/8" Headman Hustlers on my buddy's 74 Nova with Brodie heads and they were a standard pattern, not a Stal or Stal adapter like this kit is. I personally don't know of anything short of build you own that will work. Trust me,, I learned QUICKLY that the build your own is an ART for those that have the knowledge and equipment. Even with the equipment it's a hell of a chore!

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
And speaking of headers and this project,, will get back on it this weekend I hope.
Been having major issues with the back again and am just waiting for the insurance and surgeon to get it to gether for surgery #3, so things have moved slow the last few months. Pulled things back apart a little to put the Innovate wideband O2 sensors in each collector, and to weld in a EGT bung in #1 and #2 primary right near the flange. And have a new Edelbrock QuickData logger mounted and "almost' wired up.... and all most ready to go back to the track to attempt to find the next weakest link! LOL I've had to park the Nova till I can get past the NHRA physical and even if Doc passed me today,, I aint racing till I can do it without a a healthy dose of pain pills to get me through the day. So the racing and finishing this truck has been a less than front burner deal at best.

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
Schoenfeld is a REALLY good header. When you get to that level tho things start getting into the budget pretty good.

Sorry to hear that, nothing takes the fun out of stuff than back pain. Only thing more frustrating is waiting on the Dr's. Good luck with the surgery hope you get to race this season.

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
WOW I must have them confused with someone else. I remembered Schonfeld as on the level with Jere Stal, and Lemons custom headers. Maybe I was having a senior moment,, or someone bought the name and started a production line of headers or ..
. . . . i'm just loosing it! <grins>

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
My engine builder back east US recommended them, I thought the same, going to be very pricey. Hopefully the prices are not a mistake, I need to phone them and find out. If there real I'll have to go this way for now, I think you have the best choice, but that will take planning and money, and there's no time for that now. Thanks again for your input.

Re: Update on the 66 SuperPro project
i just installed a set of the newer hedman elite headers in the 1 3/4 tube, the left side was dream, but had to trim on the top flange on the passenger side and massage the front side of one tube. took some time, but they really made a difference on my motor. my previous headers were just too small anyway but is what i had from a 350 that i had in earlier. these headers have the 3/8 flanges and ball and socket collectors as well.
