Color of bow tie on hub caps?

I have been putting my truck together and I just remembered there are 2 different colors for the bow tie on the center of the hub cabs for 3/4 tons. Are 71 and 72's blue, and 69-70's yellow, and 67-68's red? Or does each color go for a different trim level excluding 67 and 68? I'm just curious more than anything.

I was going to say that the 69-70 had yellow bowties. I'm leaning this direction only because the hub caps that I got with my '70 from my aunt are yellow (white caps with black cog and yellow bowtie).

You see a lot of yellow bowties on all years 67-72, because they fit and look good, but they have been switched sometime in the last 40 years. All yellow caps originally came on 73 and newer trucks.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

The first is an example of what a 69-72 hubcap looks like - Blue bowtie with black circle and ring (this is a 3/4 ton cap). There is a lot more depth to this cap versus the other one. Needed for hub clearance.

The second is the later 70s through 80s style hubcap for a 3/4 ton. The half ton looks similar with only 5 black panels instead of 6.

I don't have a picture of the 67 and 68 caps but they had a red bowtie to match the red bowtie on the grill.

There were painted caps and chrome caps, check your spid to see which you had. There were also full wheel caps, but they were not a dog dish style and look a bit more like car caps of the age.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

That last picture is a '76-91 cap. The 73-75 Chevy caps looked like the 69-72s but with yellow bowtie (and on 8-lug caps were concave w/o black in the center). They can be popped out and painted blue w/black. All bowties were blue in 69-72...grille,horn cap,or anywhere else. From '73 on all the bowties were yellow.
In 67/68 there was some variation. There were red accent as well as dark orange. I just can't recall off hand how it went. Dog dishes are hubcaps and full wheel covers are wheel covers.

And to add to this discussion I believe that only the 3/4 ton hubcaps were originally popped out. The 1/2 ton caps were all concave, correct?

Tim, thanks for the info. I was reading these other posts and going what the heck? I knew I have seen the 69-72 style caps with yellow bow ties and you could tell they were original, not repainted. But now seeing your post, it tells me that these caps with the yellow bow tie came from 73-75 chevys. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

I took the picture from the internet; ebay NOS set. My set isn't it that nice of condition. They are straight but need to be repainted. My rebuild is going to be the 'stock' look (paint stripe and all) so I'm wanting this to be correct... Guess I will be painting the ties blue instead of yellow.

Thank you!

Ok, let's take this one step farther. I have a set of the 69-72 chevy hub caps that the bow tie is painted yellow. They are faded and need restored. They look like they have never been repainted or anything. From the info in this thread, the 69-72 hub caps were used on 73-75's but with yellow bow ties instead of blue bow ties. Is this correct? This may help others clarify where their caps came from as well.

I am not sure on the styles(actual shape) of the hub caps. I put full wheel covers on almost every truck I buy/sell. The only thing I know (maybe) is that GM did not start using the yellow trim on parts untill 1973. But I bet you are right, the 72 style caps probably went past 72 but had yellow trim. Probably too, if someone bought replacement caps after 72, I bet they were yellow.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

The caps from 69-72 (blue bowtie) were chrome and usually had splits where they seat. The 73 and up went to stainless and didn't split as easy. True for 1/2 and 3/4 ton. I have seen one exeption which is a nice yellow bowtie cap i have but is chrome... Not sure on that deal...

I have a set like the ones pictured above. I would like to paint the bowties blue. Does anyone have a paint code so I can get the right shade of blue?

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

Here is a pic of the 73-75 caps. I'm just going to say that I'm betting some of these made it on some late 72 trucks from the factory. I have seen original one owner trucks with these caps and the owners haven't changed anything on them. It seems like weirder things have happened at the assembly lines.

Re: Color of bow tie on hub caps?

Blue was the original bowtie color on 69 thru 72 pickups period. Color of the bowtie on hubcap will always match the color of the bowtie on grill or hood. The reason you see so many gold bowtie caps on 69 thru 72's today is because the original chrome over brass caps are super weak, they dent easily and split on edges. Most orignals were removed and thrown away. So they put on similar gold bowtie caps that are much stronger stainless steel or they put on the dime a dozen completely mismatched flat aluminum 76 thru 91 style. I have seen blue convex (popped out )stainless steel caps on some '72's but don't know if they were a mid year change to stainless or later parts department replacements for the weaker original chrome. The similar style painted caps shown in photo above were used from 1973 to 1978 on base models. The same style in stainless was only used from 1973 to 1975. Strange but true, I have seen a couple of chrome gold bowtie caps concave (dished in), but very rare.

Just came across this thread and just recently I had went thru and sorted my new old stock caps to put a set together for another board member, here are a couple of pictures showing the 1/2 and 3/4 ton NOS caps in bright and painted in both the 69-72 type blue bowties (first pic) and then the 73-76'ish? type yellow bowties (second pic) for comparison.
