Re: 454 price check plz
I believe the core value of a 454 on a rebuilt engine purchase is $400-$450, assuming that it is rebuildable. Sounds like you might be able so salvage/sell some parts off that truck and maybe get $500 for those other parts, so that would justify the $900 asking price, IMHO, but why not try $800 cash in hand and see what he says? A 454 is a great engine when it is running well, but it is pricey to rebuild, compared to a 350.

Re: 454 price check plz
It depends on what you want the 454 for. If you're just going to rebuild it with the stock peanut port heads and a little bit bigger cam, it'll be a hoss for sure. If you're going to add large ovals, etc., it'll get a bit more expensive. I can generally buy complete 454's here with large ovals for around $250 - $300, peanut port head motors are $200 or so.
tucsonjwt, a stock rebuild on both is about the same, less than $100 difference. Machine work is all exactly the same, bearings and rings are the same, pistons may cost a bit more but not much. Matter of fact, big block oval port heads can support 700+hp when ported, you're waaay into aftermarket stuff with small blocks built to the same level, GM never made any really good flowing smallblock heads. |

Re: 454 price check plz
I paid 1k for my 79 1ton with a great running 454 with about 60k on it since overhaul. I paid $500 for my low miles 454 out of a motor home. I got about $2500 in my fresh rebuilt 454 and still dont have a cam, timing chain or bolt kit. 900 for a running 454 truck is ok. Just plan on rebuilding it or atleast freshing it up. I feel 300-600 is the going price for a complete 454 depending on the shape its in.

Re: 454 price check plz
I paid a grand for my 454 along with an overdrive transmission, both from a 95 motor home. The 454 was a 41k mile TBI motor, I sold the transmission for $500.00. The transmission was an electronically controlled heavy-duty model with the brake drum style parking brake.
The motor is a peanut port version, but I wasn't looking for high performance. I sold the TBI and manifold then replaced both with a Weiand and a Holley 670 Street Avenger. The older I get, the more I like stock. LOL.

Re: 454 price check plz
You might want to check Craig's List down my way. You know things are way more expensive just outside the beltway.

Re: 454 price check plz
This is definitely true. I am on the Hampton roads c'list from time to time. My cousin in law lives in Hampton (he is building a 57' Ford panel) and one of my good buds lives in va. Beach. Can't find a running 454 up here for less than $800..............

Re: 454 price check plz
Just picked up two twin 1973 marine motors last week. One turns over fine and the other is stuck for now. Have take the head and pan of the stuck motor and found it's been bored .030 over and has TRW 9.7 compression forged pistons and some rust in a couple of cylinders. Bottom end is quite clean though. Two bolt main, cast cranks, large open oval ports.
Got both for $300 and that included 3 cast intakes, 3 carbs, lots of marine manifold parts and the bonus was a Factory GM aluminum dual plane rectangular port manifold in good shape.Should be worth a couple bucks to sell.
