NV4500 behind a 6.2
I have a 6.2l diesel with a th400 behind it that I have been thinking about swapping in a NV4500 in behind it for the OD. I was wondering what it would take to get this to work. I know I would need a 85+ Hydro clutch out of a Chevy truck, and a Chevy NV4500. What I do not know is, what flywheel do you need to use? and what clutch? Will a flywheel from a 6.2l with a SM465 work, and then just buy a NV4500 clutch and it will just bolt on?
I dont want to go with a 700R4 because this is a 1 ton 4x4 crew cab, that i plan to haul with, and later down the road I want to swap a cummins into the truck, so swapping in a nv4500 just gets me closer to the goal of a cummins. I guess another question would be, Will a NP208 from a th400 bolt straight up to a NV4500? Thanks, Matt

Re: NV4500 behind a 6.2
The nv4500 has a different bolt pattern that the sm465. The flywheel from a 6.2 with a sm465 will work with your nv4500. I am gathering parts for the same swap now myself.

Re: NV4500 behind a 6.2
So the stock bell housing on the nv4500 does not have the same bolt patern as all the other gm transmssion to bolt up to a 350/454/6.2/ect?

Re: NV4500 behind a 6.2
Yes I know that, you had me confused. The only sm465 related part I was goting to use was a flywheel. I plan on using the stock nv4500 bell housing.

If your final intention is a Cummins engine get the `96+ GM NV4500 unit. The Dodge bellhousing to tranny bolt pattern is the same as the GM internal slave units built 96+. When you swap in the Cummins you'll need a bunch of Dodge Cummins pieces between the engine and tranny including the Dodge diesel input shaft and bellhousing. Use a flywheel made for your 82-87 6.2L diesel. Use a clutch kit for a `96+ GM diesel truck. You need a 32 spline input GM NP208. It will directly bolt up to a NV4500. The 4x4 TH400 and SM465 mated to the NP208 had 32 spline output shafts. The 4x4 TH350 and TH700R4 had 27 spline output shafts. |

Re: NV4500 behind a 6.2
Thanks for the info. The nv3500 sounds tempting for now. As my goal with the cummins is probably a while down the road. Do the nv3500s have 32 spline outputs?

Re: NV4500 behind a 6.2
How would a NV3500 handle pulling trailers and all that? This is a 1 ton truck and I plan to work it. I know the 6.2 is probably not the best option for it, but I also plan on dd it and so MPG would be nice when not towing.
