If it is controlled with the ignition switch, and has a full 12 volts...go for it.
I'm still trying to think of what it could be. |

I don't know what the wire was for originally, but like longhornmail said, if it has the full 12 volts (with the key in the "start" and "run" positions) it should work great!
If is is powered correctly, start pulling fuses with the key in "run" to see which one provides the power. This may give you some more clues. Good Luck!

I'd say it's the HEI. The white wire was/is the resistance wire for the points ignition. This may be coincidence, but if you get a pigtail from Summit for HEI, the wire will be pink.

Pink on GM is Ignition. However, I'd check to see if it is hot when the switch is in the Start position.

71GMC_3/4T, if it is original than you are right...pink is ignition, but it should not be out to the engine.
After re-reading the original post, is this pink wire coming out the back of the fuse box and sharing teh same slot that the white cloth covered wire is coming from? If so, it is some one's attempt for the HEI wire. mine was wired like that when i got it, but it wasn't done very well and fell out about 6 months ago or so. |

I have a '67 and it does not have a pink wire in the engine harness. However some of the auxillary add on wiring, such as the TH400 kickdown switch, are pink coming from the fuse block taps inside of the cab and then it turns to orange at the pedal switch. If it is in the engine harness then it is probably a HEI wire that somebody added at some point.

Just FYI....you can pull the wire and male spade out of the block and replace it with a new spade and a new wire. You can even reuse the connector if you REALLY want to, or you can get new ones for a variety of sources, including Pep Boys.
I'm adding and replacing wires in my harness off the existing bulkhead so the fuel pump, choke, torque converter lockup all go through the bulkhead connector instead of through holes in the firewall.

Here are a few pictures of the wires I'm talking about. They might be a little dark but you should be able to make them out.

Yep, that would be the ignition. The white is a resistance wire and the pink would go to either an HEI or after market distributor that takes full 12 volts. This is all based on the pink wire not going anywhere else of course. It is a way to get ignition hot to somewhere without running from the fuse block, just not a good one.
