Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
what....you're not coming???
My only other progress.....took out the lenses. They're actually super nice. Going to see if I can clean up/polish the red ones and use them since they are guide and no chips/scratches/fading. I will get new reverse lenses since they are slightly cloudy.... ....but the buckets behind are super nice and not even surface rust in there. Never see metal this nice around my area!

Sure, come on over Here's a pic of the NOS swaybar mounts/bushings I just got from Tim Christian. Trying to put only the best parts on this thing. Some of the factory parts are nice but I wanted to get all the new stuff for when I re-do the front suspension on the truck.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
keep up the good work , it took me about 25 hours of non stop stripping and i didnt do the inside of the cab, just the jambs, that does include firewall and outsides of the doors, there is a disc called a whizzy wheel about 4 inches round that you put on your die grinder it kind of feels like a stout red scotch brite pad , it works awesome for stripping door jambs and around window frames and rain gutters it is awesome , saves alot of time and doesnt eat away at the metal !!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
I'll have to look into that wheel for when I am over at Jason's shop. I only have a small compressor that doesn't keep up with air tools so this is all with two 4 1/2" grinders. One with a twisted wire cup for the curved areas and to knock off things like the leftover adhesive from the side moldings/the rust bubbles.
Then I use the paint removal disc (looks like corral) on all the flatter/larger surfaces. That takes the paint off instantly and from what I've read does not damage the metal at all. It takes the paint off almost instantly all the way to bare metal. Like I was saying the door and both sides took me about 2 1/2 hours with a worn down paint removal disc. Hoping it doesn't take me 25hrs total

Got the wire wheels from harbour freight in a pack, and got the paint removal discs online from an industrial supply place (can't remember the name now)

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Minor update....tkorinek is going to have the front fenders and the door blasted for me. So when they get here they will be ready for final body work and priming....I will work on having the cab ready when they get here

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
My brother in law came over for a couple hours tonight. Probably got a solid hour of actual work in between talking
He's coming over Thursday and we hope to get more done then. My wire cups and my paint strip discs are all worn so I'll get more tomorrow.... Took the front clip off for easy access to the firewall and since I have two new blasted original fenders on the way Unbolted the e-brake and brake booster brackets from the firewall. will climb in the truck and finish removing them tomorrow. Limited progress from this evening... Gave my brother in law the dirty work of all the curves of the firewall/cowl with the wire cup and I used the limited remainder of my paint strip disc to get the area above the rear window stripped and the area on the roof above the cab seam (about 8-10" worth)

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
At this point I've been considering my paint options. The firewall will be white on the outside...but I think it looks better if the inner firewall is painted satin black and also the windshield wiper cowl area. also considering painting the underside of the cab with undercoating. Opinions on this? Should it all be white? Will I hurt value one way or the other?

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
I like the original look of a body color painted firewall. When they are black it just looks jerry-rigged to me. As far as the underneath.....I don't blame anyone for using a rubber undercoat if the truck is to be driven at all. The only way I would stick with paint only underneath is for a strictly trailor queen. JMO

I am pretty much to the point of building this into a trailer queen The interior is going to be top rate, I have super nice AZ/CA sheetmetal I'm going to sand to bare metal before painting, I have a bunch of NOS parts I'm throwing on it, I'm getting a show quality restored A/C setup, and all original engine brackets, show quality painted inner fenders, and I'm taking apart a nice painted frame to make it into a show quality frame So I'm thinking I better paint it all correct and white to get top value for it. Next owner could easily spray undercoating or a spray in bedliner under it if they decide to drive it....

The theme of your truck seems to me to be a restoration, given all the awesome parts you're throwing at it. The only thing off on this truck is going to be a frame. If you want top dollar for this, you're going to have to keep it as pure as possible to overcome that. As a rule of thumb, I would keep any deviations from stock limited to things that can easily be undone. If you were doing a resto-mod or keeping it forever, then no problem with what you want to do.

See my advice above? Disregard. Check the truck in this link $31,100 and still hasn't met the reserve. If you do something first rate, the market will recognize it. Do as you will, just do it first class...

What about the kick panel areas? This semi-custom cheyenne has them in black and I like how it cleans up that area....

Paint on the firewall and kick panels, my upholstery guy said he can order my carpet kit with extra carpet left on the front to run further up the firewall
