Rear main seal
So I am going to attempt to replace the rear main seal, one mech. told me im gonne have to drop the tranny, and another said i can access it by dropping the oil pan. Any advice on this? any special reading i can do that will help?
The motor is the original 253 inline 6. I'm new to the forums and any help would very much appreciated. Mike |

Re: Rear main seal
greetings. do you mean a 235? if so, it should have a rope seal around the crank under the rear crank bearing. it can be got after by removing the oil pan & the rear main bearing cap. it will probably be rock hard & will come out in chunks. be careful not to scratch the shaft. they make a tool for the job & i have bought several over the years but they never worked for me. when you get the new one in try to stagger the ends a little off with the parting surface of the block & cap so the oil won't have a straight shot out of the engine. hope this helps a little.
