Mufflers or Glasspacks?

Im putting a set of new pipes on my truck and want to know what exactly is the difference between the two and which ones are better for what? I want a exhaust that has a nice rumble to it but isnt annoyingly loud when driving down the road or when i get heavy on the pedal. What do you guys like and run on your trucks?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

I have a old set of glass packs. They have a nice low rumble to them.

I agree, I hate hearing that loud "pop pop pop" from trucks.

Low rumble/grumble sounds best, with a bit of cam lope.

let us know what you choose

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

it depends? If you want that old school look and sound go exhaust manifolds, dual exhaust with a good set of glass packs out the back.

Or a nice set of throaty mufflers (my preference). Listen to a few set ups and decide.

Best of luck,
Roger

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

I have 2 1/2" exhaust with super 40 flowmasters on my 72. I think it sounds great. My buddy has thrush glass packs on his 72 and it also sounds great, not to loud just driving around, but has great tone under acceleration.

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

Well if I wasn't putting my truck up for sale and had to replace my exhaust today, I would put on a pair of Porters. I just really dig the sound of them. Check em out http://www.portermufflers.com/ Hope that helps u man.

BUT nothing can make that kool, smooth, deep rumble of a long tube glasspack..

magna flows are nice, my truck has dynomax on it(came on it)
it's got a nice rumble, and only barks when you slam the hammer down..
but thats with a 8.5 to one tire sbc..
a 11 to 1 sbc would sound totally different with the same pipes

just say no to flowmasters.. I had a set on my 402 and it was fun for about a week
I still have a set on my 86 monty SS and the drown at 60-75mph is bad,
but thats a lowly 305 lugging around in o/d

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

Maybe I'm getting old, but I no longer like glasspacks. I like the modern chambered muffs better. Great flow and sound without too much noise and no packing to blow out. My '94 350 TBI has stock manifolds, no cat and 1 glasspack running through dual tails. It sucks! Even my dog hates riding in it, its so loud. One manifold is cracked etc, so its all going in the scrap pile. I ordered Flowtech ceramic coated Afterburner Headers, Flowtech "Y" pipe w/ Oxy sensor bung,(my 4x4 doesn't have room to go straight back on both sides) Afterburner chambered muffler, flex coupler, tubing and hardware. I plan to install it next week and am hoping for big gains in power, torque, looks and sound ! P.S. UPS just delivered this ($72 direct from Flowtech with fast free shipping):

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

good luck with those flowtechs, I tought their headers were cheap till I had to move the engine back 2", have a new driveshaft made and hacked up my lower ontrol arm.
new glasspacks suck, way too loud for my taste. Een after they're broken in under aceleration I think they sound horrible.
I hhave some knockoff flowmaster 40s on my truck and like them alot.

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

I have to agree with DannyK. I never really liked that raspy, popping sound of glasspacks. Regular turbo mufflers are too blah as well. A decent chambered muffler just has an awesome sound to it.

My dad ran a turbo muffler on his big block 67 chevelle for many, many years. My step brother and I tried for a long time to get him to put on flowmasters (before every company out there had chambereds) and he resisted. When he rebuilt the car he caved and put some one. It was like night and day. He loved them ever since.

They better fit, cuz they were NOT cheap. Headers and Y pipe alone were $487 !

Treveiger, I researched the Crap out of mufflers when it was time for my new dual system. EVERYONE is using FlowCrappers and while that's nice for them I wanted something........Different/Better.
After a few months of listening to everyones sound bites I finally decided and I got my wish: Hooker Aerochamber Mufflers.
Dude, seriously, these things ROOCCKKK I sound like I have a nasty Cam and it doesn't have that Nasty "Rap" to them either and it doesn't sound loud in the cab at all, but everyone will turn their heads to see "Who's that".
You can get them in black or regular silver and Summit has them for $70 lousy bucks a piece (I got the SS version) and they sound AWESOME.
Go to www.holleytv.com/featured_landing.php?reset=true
and see and Hear for yourself.
I have a standard GMPP 350/300 Horse SB with Hedman Headers and 2 1/2" Piping through 2 1/2" Hooker Aerochambers going out behind the rear tire.
Before the Spring is out I will have a Video.

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

I would like to put true dual pipes on my truck not with the H pipe or anything like that just to pipes going out the back. Why arent glass backs flow efficient? I want something with good flow not just good sound.

mmmmmmmmmmm, good!!!

FYI: You have to click the link under "video categories\exhaust sounds" to find video.

I really like the old style straight pipe chambered mufflers also.

Re: Mufflers or Glasspacks?

I've got headers and dual 12" Cherry Bomb glasspacks on my truck. Well, the body of the muffler is only 8" long. I think they sound great. Especially when those secondaries on the q-jet open. But, that's me and I like everything as loud as I can get it. If it were legal to run around with straight pipes I'd do it. Since I'm only 20 that might add to the equation too...

Hooker Aerochambers are a straight through Design and are THE Highest rated straight through Muffler on the market. Go to the site and read and take my word for it, they're worth every penny and you'll love the sound.

Glasspacks are mufflers. There are even louder mufflers these days than glasspacks. I like chambered mufflers

40 years ago the only Turbo mufflers were Corvair Turbo mufflers, where the name came from. Remember that? In the early '70s is when they started with the decibel laws and guys started running Corvair Turbos to maintain good flow, tone it down, yet still sound like something.
