Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

WELL..........Got the sway bar installed......BUT.......while driving it around, testing it out............my tranny blew the front seal and lost most of the fluid! I barely made it home after adding 3 quarts of fluid! I do have pics of the sway bar and glove box emblem installed for ya though. Kinda disheartining since that happened today. Although the sway bar was a NICE upgrade!

Notice the huge black spot under the truck. That's how much it lost in 20 min!

Sorry to hear about the tranny. A stock rebuild on the TH350 tranny should be no more than $250 to $300 tops. Of course you have to pull and install which shouldn't be to hard. Couple hrs to pull and a couple more to install, unless there are a few beer breaks in between.

The sway bar looks really nice.

Thanks for the heads up. Can I drop it out and leave the engine in? And I'm talking about doing this in a driveway too. Yeah, LOL probably be a few of those!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

Slick, I coundn't even begin to tell you how many cold ones that have been gone through while pulling motors and trannys out in the driveway. You just need two floor jacks and a buddy, about 4 wrenches and that tranny is outta there. Back in the day I had to replace one in my El'camino in a apartment parking lot by myself. It can be done with one person but isn't fun.

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

Just called the local (and trusted) tranny shop. He said to pull it himself and just to replace front seal be $350. But if I wanted a full rebuild (him pulling and installing) it'd be $850 and that includes new torque converter, gaskets, seals, and everything. Hmmmm.......

Highway robbery!!! The tranny still shifts fine correct? If so just drop the tranny yourself get the front and rear seal for the tranny for about 10 bucks. And while you are at it drop the pan and change the filter and fluids. Pop it back in and only spent $30 to $40 with about 3 to 4 hrs time tops.

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

Whatta bout if you pull it yourself and install yourself?

Or, buy a core/rebuild kit/good reccommended book and try your hand at rebuilding? These ol chevy trucks are a good way to learn things!!!!!!!!!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

I just don't know what to do. Yeah $40 would be great, but there's also no telling what damage I done to it trying to get back home. And before all this we kept hearing whining type sounds out of it, even though it pulled and shifted fine. So i'm so stressed about it right now. I just want it done right. Compared to buying a new tranny and converter $850 ain't lookin' too bad.

I feel what you are saying....I wish I lived closer by so I could come help ya.... By the looks of it, I know you hate paying someone else to do the work when you are making great strides on your own so far with the truck.

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

Yeah. Thanks man, wish I had some buddies around here too that actually knew something about vehicles. After talking this situation over with the wife looks like I'm gonna do the rebuild. That way I have no worries, although it may be a lil while before I get the cash to do it. Gonna part out that other 67 I got to get the $. In the meantime I can do some other things I've been needing too.

Forgot to mention I also got original kickdown cable setup for my 250 inline six with TH350 setup. NOT that'll do me much good right now!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

I took my 465 in to get it rebuilt this summer expecting it to be at least in the $500 range and after he took the top off he said it just needed a reseal which cost around 150 dollars. Have them look it over it might not be to bad.

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

Hopefully. It may just need a reseal and a new torque converter. Probably $250-$300. But who knows. Figured I may just do the full workup while it's out so no worries.

Ya that what I figured too, if you check Craigslist you might find a rebuilt one for cheap also. Have you thought of rebuilding it yourself?

I've looked around, but mine has the longer 9" tailshaft, so harder to find. Then you never know about people. "sure it's rebuilt, good as new" then 5miles down the road KERPLUNK! But definately not ready to attempt it myself, even with a good book. Plus I don't have the space or garage to do it in yet. The wife's already been on me about cleaning greasy parts in the bath tub!

Re: Slick Copper's Build Thread

Well still trying to get the money together. Got the doghouse of my other 67 sold, so that's giving me a little over half of it. In the meantime I have some other things to work on on it.
Chevelle springs for the rear to drop my rear about 3" (thanks Shawn!)
Whiteface gauge kit and new lense (thanks Jonathan!) Got to get a few more things together to finish those though, haven't started on them yet.
original stainless door trim, needs polished and installed
AnD need to get some parts and things off of the other truck and start selling what I don't need.
Thanks for checking in on me buddy! I'll be sure to post pics of anything I do!
