Oil Pan drain plug - Big Block

I have a 69 dated 396 in my truck. We are getting very close to firing it for the first time

We have discovered a small problem though, we noticed this morning just a small drip every 2-3 min or so .. so we tried to tighten it. It just seems small, and like it is not tightening up good. I went to Advance Auto Parts and bought another one. The parts counter showed 1/2 20. We put this one in, .. same deal.

My question is, would anyone know the correct size drain plug I need? Are the ones from Advance / Auto Zone just not the same quality as say a GM bolt? Bigger / heavier threads maybe? I'm really hoping the pan is not stripped out but honestly the bolt just feels too small.

Your thoughts please?
Thanks.

Are you using a fiber or plastic washer with it?

Re: Oil Pan drain plug - Big Block

They do make a pansaver drain plug. It comes in oversizes 1 ,2, and 3. When checking on the oversize plug make sure the washer is on it a stated above and that there is'nt one stuck to the pan as well. [I am saying make sure you have a washer just one]. I have seen two on the same plug causing what you have but I just think an oversize is in order.

Re: Oil Pan drain plug - Big Block

The OD of the bolt just seems small compared to the ID of the hole in the pan. Only one plastic washer. It will 'snug' up .. just not tighten up.

Would places like Summit sell the Pansaver plugs?

Your pan is stripped out. Like hugger says there is oversize plugs available. They are self tapping & cut new threads. Any parts store should have one. Use a single oversize.
