Looking for answers
Hey guys, I picked up a 5 lug 12 bolt Chevy rear end with posi and the guy i got it from said it was out of a 67 C10.
But if it was, shouldn't it have been a 6 lug? I started to clean it up and came across some numbers, maybe you guys can help me out with this. Standing in place of the driveshaft looking at the rear end just to the right of the pumpkin (drivers side) i found a GM63 and in the same place but on the left side (passenger side) i found the numbers 3896838 N and then further left on the actual axle tube i found some numbers stamped into the tube that read RHB (which looks to be stamped over an "RF") then W356 2 E (which would be the number to go by? the "RHB" or the "RF"?) so can anybody decode this and tell me what year / model this rear is out of so i know what brake parts to look for? I am pretty sure it has either 3:07 or 3:08 gears. Thanks for your help guys! Last edited by SHORTDOG99; 04-03-2011 at 02:36 AM. |

Re: Looking for answers
Shortdog, my truck has a 3896839 axle in it, only it is a 6 lug 12 bolt truck differential. Mine is from a 78. I think it is also a 3.08, non posi. How big is the 'pumpkin' on yours? Mine is huge. I guess that wasn't much help!

Re: Looking for answers
Does anybody else know of any other websites that give "decoding" info on GM rear axles? I still can't find any info on the numbers that are on the axle!

Re: Looking for answers
That's exactly what i thought. So far i am coming to the conclusion that it is a 71-72 rear but i am not positive! I want to know so i know what year wheel cylinders and brake parts to buy.

Re: Looking for answers
My 72 1/2 ton had the 3896838 rear end in it, 5 lug non posi. My dad's 75 1/2 ton also had the same rear end.. Not sure if that helps at all.
