Spring Question

Looking under my 72 C-10 truck, I have the main coil spring, then there is a smaller shorter coil, then there is also a half a leaf spring. Is this an option or 2? Does this mean that I can carry more than a half ton in the truck?

Sounds like auxillary overload springs. Those were and option on coil trucks. I believe extra 500 pound capacity, not sure. They bolt to frame and there are pads under the trailing arms for them to rest on.

Not sure what you mean by main coil and shorter coil, unless you have coil over shocks?

The shorter coil is seperate from the main coil (and shocks), there is a gap so it will only contact the frame if the truck is squatted a few inches. It looks like another overload spring to me.
Anyone else have these?

Sounds like backyard engineering to me, never seen that. assume the extra coil is on the trailing arm forward of the larger one which should be directly over axle?

Was I correct on the short leaf spring? You should have aux overload or some such verbage on your glovebox for that one.

There are two options codes in my glovebox for springs. I think those little shortys are stock. They are directly above the axle. inboard from the others.

The Heavy (duty) rear spring refers to a stiffer coil (the large one sandwiched beteen trailing arm and frame. Standard duty was standard, the HD was optional. It is not the mystery 2nd coil spring.

As mentioned earlier the Aux spring is the overload leaf.

It appears to me your truck's original owner intended to use it for heavy loads. The additional coil is probably an attempt to futher extend it's capabilities but is not a factory option (IMO). Probably bought a 1/2 ton where they should have gone with the 3/4 ton. It's possible it was used to haul an in-bed camper as well.

The resto pack will give you a lot more detail as what each RPO means.

I can't wait for my resto pack to get here I think I still have the original "Highlander" seat upholstry in it, and it's in perfect shape. I wonder if I can find a picture of the original higlander seats anywhere.

The resto pack is interesting, but be ready to be dissapointed. It's not jammed full of all the stuff you ever dreamed you'd get your hands on. It's actually better just to get the chasis, maintenenance, and shop manuals for your year through one of the aftermarket outfits. The resto pack is just extra material...

Yes but it does give pretty good desriptions of RPO's and other technical info that will help you determine if your truck is "correct" or not, which was the original question. I agree, the chassis overhaul and service manuals give you more "nuts and bolts".

As for the Highlander, that should be listed on your glovebox as "Special Promo" or something like that. It consists of several tiers of options. But all highlanders would have tilt, black carpet, automatics, and a plaid seatcover (orange, blue, avacodo, etc). Only available with Custome Deluxe package which got you chrome trim goodies, etc.

All the details on these packages should be in your resto pack.

Have fun.
