Drive shaft ?

Hi all,
I have a 2006 1500 z71 with 5.3 and seem to have a clunk when I take off and when the tranny shifts. I jacked up the rear end and checked the u-joints and there doesn't seem to be any play inthem. What are the chances the the transfer case or the rearend is messed up? The mileage is 80k

I have an 04 2500 HD and it has a clunk when starting and stopping, some times!

I did some searching at Dieselplace.com and there the discussion was around the driveshaft where it goes into the back of the transmission or into the transfer case on a 4wd. They suggested pulling the driveshaft out, (first ,marking the location so it goes back in the same way) and clean the splines on the end of the driveshaft and on the output with brake clean. Then to lube the splines back up and put the driveshaft back in. I haven't confirmed yet what to lube it with but I think they were talking about using ATF on 4wd and grease on 2wd. Something about you do not want to get grease into the back of the transfer case.

The theory was that the splines become dirty and rusted and then they do not slide in and out freely, but with a clunk.

I haven't taken the time yet to do this, but it should only take 45 minutes so I will hopefully try it soon.

I had a 95 GMC 2wd halfton that i had to remove the drive shaft and lube the splines, Worked like a champ.
I will try the atf fluid and see if that works Thanks for the advice

Well I pulled the driveshaft and found very minimal slop in front u-joint, rear u-joint appeared tight with no signs of play.
So I just installed the front u-joint and called it good. Took it for a test drive and it seems to have fixed my clunk, will let you know more info as I put more miles on the truck.
