crank but no spark
the short story is ... i did the valve cover gaskets and cleaned up the dizzy cap and rotor point and after that i have no spark ..... i have 12vlts on both sides of the coil which seems weird ..... i haven't changed the coil yet ... but it seems to ohm out within range ... i've been throwing parts at it and i know this isn't a great way to go about things .... my brothers a mechanic but he never works on older cars ... and he's stumpt ...
i removed the tape on the fir\wall looms and discovered a pink wire spliced into the yellow for the soleniod i still have points and it seems that the brown resistor wire has been removed from the circuit ....it was cut off and taped in the loom ... i have no idea the wiring was so hacked in this truck ..... like i said the problem started all of a sudden .. any ideas would be great thanks

Re: crank but no spark
Here this will make you an expert.
http://abbysenior.com/mechanics/ignition.htm After you read this site take your distributor cap off and unplug the coil lead from it and hold the end near a good ground. Make sure the points are closed and off the cam. Then turn the key on and with a non-metallic object like a popsicle stick, pry the points open and watch for a spark on the end of the coil wire. You should get a spark each time you let the points close and then open. If you get a spark then rotate the engine until the points block is on the very tip of a cam lobe. Set the point gap at .019 to .020 thousands. Put every thing together and crank the engine. You should not get 12 volts on the coil unless the starter solenoid is engaged and the starter is turning. The resistor wire or ballast resistor should drop the voltage to about 9 volts.

Re: crank but no spark
have you cleaned and gapped your points or set dwell with a meter?
