I had the same issue finding my 76 Camaro rs.

I had the VIN number and the old plate number, but the DMV refused to help me. Something about the information being dangerous.

What I ended up doing was I hired a Private Investigator, make sure you get one that is both bonded and insured with a license. They can get access to the current owner's address name and phone number.

Unfortunately I found out my car had been wrecked two years after I sold it. But he did give me the name of the owner and where it was crashed, a copy of the accident report and everything. Its a real shame but hopefully you'll get better news.
